IREX mourns the tragic loss of 22-year-old program associate Alice Swanson, who died in a bicycle accident in Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Alice was a bright, dedicated international development professional who touched many lives through her work with teachers from around the world.
"Alice had an incredible ability to connect with international colleagues and find common ground for increased mutual understanding. She modeled best practices in public diplomacy,” commented Joyce Warner, Director of IREX’s Education Programs Division.
Alice graduated from Amherst College with a degree in history and concentration in Middle East Studies. In addition, she studied in Nicaragua and Egypt and came to IREX in January 2008 after completing an internship with the Middle East Institute.

All of her colleagues and friends at IREX express their deepest sympathies to her loved ones. She will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to support human rights throughout the world, a cause to which Alice was deeply committed. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trustees of Northborough Unitarian Church, PO Box 143, Northborough, MA 01532 for the Alice Rowan Swanson Fund.
