Code of ethics for journalists on the way

Sunday, June 28, 2009

A DRAFT code of ethics for journalists in Bahrain is expected to be the outcome of a two-day workshop opening at the Crowne Plaza today.

The event is organised by Bahrain Journalists Association (BJA) and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) as part of a regional media development project sponsored by the Middle East Partnership Initiative programme and managed by IREX.

The workshop will be led by IREX Middle East and North Africa project director Matthew Shelley and BJA president Isa Al Shaygi.

David McCraw, a former journalist and now vice-president and assistant general counsel of the New York Times Company and leading attorney for the New York Times will attend.

He has been active in drafting a code of ethics for the newspaper and will cite codes from the West and Arab word.

An International Federation of Journalists representative will discuss a regional ethics initiative for Gulf media.

Today the workshop will discuss various codes and what may be appropriate for Bahrain.

Based on it, Mr McCraw will offer recommendations for a Bahrain Journalists Code of Ethics for consideration tomorrow. Following the workshop, he will help draft a final code.
