Teacher Training Helps Rebuild Haitian Education

After the devastating 2010 earthquake destroyed the only public teacher-training institute in Haiti, the already critical shortage of qualified teachers in Haiti threatened to get even worse. Fanfan Joseph, a Haitian English teacher and alumnus of an IREX-led teacher development program, seized the opportunity of an IREX grant to provide intensive professional development workshops to fellow teachers. With topics including lesson planning, cooperative learning techniques, and strategies for overcrowded classrooms, Joseph’s workshops emphasized practical skills that teachers can use in their classrooms immediately. Joseph’s workshops attracted teachers from schools across northern Haiti, each of whom oversees hundreds of students. As a result of the workshops, thousands of Haitian students are benefiting from more interactive classrooms.

great resource!

Thank you, Solmaz, for sharing the Teacher's Guide to Earthquake Education. What a wonderful resource for Haitian teachers (and teachers everywhere) to share with their students and colleagues. I will pass this along to the IREX alumni in Haiti to make sure that they have access to it. Thanks for sharing! -Sarah Dye, Program Coordinator, IREX
