IREX Remembers Sidy Dieng from Senegal

A dear friend of IREX and distinguished alumnus of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), Mr. Sidy Dieng of Foundiougne, Senegal passed away on October 8, 2010. Among the first group of Senegalese teachers to participate in the ILEP program, Sidy traveled to the United States in January 2009 for a five-month professional development program for international teachers.

A teacher of English as a Foreign Language since 2000, Sidy took great pride and joy in his profession. During his five months at Northern Kentucky University for the ILEP program, he impressed the faculty and students he met with his optimistic spirit and enthusiasm for learning. One of Sidy’s research interests was strategies for managing large class sizes in the English language classroom, which was a constant challenge in his school and many schools in Senegal. Sidy’s average class had 80 students, and sometimes more. Upon his return to Senegal after completing the ILEP program, Sidy’s outstanding dedication to his profession inspired him to design a workshop for his colleagues on best practices for managing large classes. Sidy collaborated with a fellow ILEP alumnus, Ismaila Diouf, to design and deliver this workshop to share some of the best practices and strategies they learned during the ILEP program. The workshop held in April 2010 was attended by over fifty teachers and a representative from the Senegalese Ministry of Education. In addition to his outstanding efforts to share his experience and knowledge, Sidy supervised his school’s English Club and served as English Pedagogical Advisor for teachers from schools around Foundiougne. Sidy received his MA in Applied Linguistics and Grammar from Gaston Berger University in 1998, and a Certificate for Junior Secondary School Teaching in 2002.

Sidy’s joyful spirit will be warmly remembered by IREX staff, all the ILEP alumni who knew Sidy, his friends and colleagues at Northern Kentucky University, and the American teachers and students he met during his internship at Connor High School in Hebron, Kentucky.

SIDY AS MY BROTHER

While I was watching Sidy’s video in “Mammoth Cave” my youngest daughter asked me why I was tearing up! Really I can’t give her reply at that time. After our faculty work (AT NKU) we always found Sidy in Kroger with chicken roast. For that he was always known to us as Kroger chickenise Sidy. Actually he was such a wonderful man who knows how to enjoy. That’s why he always enjoys our jokes. Sidy always call me as brother Alam and I saw him to respect Pup as he was senior and come from his same country. After receiving his news I was thinking if I have wing I can fly to Senegal and say him goodbye for the last time! May Allah keep him with our Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihey Wasallam). ALAM SYED NKU. Please announce the winners' names firmly . Where are ILEP 2011 Egypt Selections ? When will we travel to the USA ?

I'm not really good in

I'm not really good in expressing my feeling but one thing for sure that I really lost my 'together forever' friend from Senegal. I remember, I received an email from Sidy the day before his gone about someone who hijack his email and online business, I plan to reply him but then I have to go out of town (it makes me so sad) I know that Allah has plan for everybody's life and this is His plan for Sidy. Hope Allah give his family the strenght. I'll remember you Sidy, your joke, your dance (my pole when I did pole dance), how you were chickenized by Kroger (haha). I'm out of words, Innalillahi wainnaillahirojiun.

Condolence

It’s really sad news for us - the ILEP alumni 2009. I am deeply shocked for Sidy’s sudden death. I was not with him at the same host University in ILEP program, but I spent and talked few minutes with him in his room at Gallaudet Hotel during our closing orientation in Washington DC. As I remember, we had to check out our hotel room for the Air port a bit earlier. So at the eve of the departure the hotel I along with my one Bangladeshi alumnus took a rest for a while in his room (His flight was next day). He entertained us very cordially in his room and I noticed Sidy was very cooperative and cheerful minded. May Allah, the almighty, bless Sidy with mercy and place his soul in haven. Best wishes Abul Azhar Md. Sanaullah Bangladesh ILEP Alumni 2009

Our brother: gone from our eyes but not from our hearts and mind

Sidy, I pray Allah in His limitless Grace to welcome you in His Paradise and may Prophet Muhammad (PBH) and Serigne Touba (your guide) be your companions in Heaven. You were a true believer and brother, full of love for others. May Allah give your family the strength to face these difficult days and bless your kids and give them a much longer life. I will never forget the good days I had in your company and the joy of sharing your liveliness. Your were the personification of humility. Where you were there was happiness. I know for sure that whoever has met you will grieve your loss. Ngor NGOM, ILEP alumni 2009 (Clemson University), Malick SALL High School Louga, Senegal.

I was shocked when I heard the sad news. I had the chance to meet with him during his pre-departure orientation and upon return he helped the ILEP teachers get ready for their trip as well. I remember his joyful spirit, always laughing. May he rest in peace. Kiné, U.S Embassy, Senegal

sad news

I had the pleasure of meeting Sidy through the ILEP program hosted at NKU. I remember him fondly from our orientation dinner. condolence for SIDY

I am deeply shocked to get the news of premature death of SIDY , a member of the IREX family. His untimely death will prevent his endeavour to share his experiences with the fellow teachers of Senegal. It' s a great loss to all the family member of IREX in general and IREX friends from Senegal in particular. In future some prizes may be given to commemorate SIDY. sabyasachi from INDIA.

Deepest sympathy from Bangladesh

I am so shocked to hear this news!! The very first day in Washington, he attracted our attention. He was so good and full of life! In many of our pictures, he was there smiling. Though we had not been in the same university, the days in the Washington gave me a scope to know him. May Allah rest his soul in peace.

" Don't ask for whom the bells toll because they toll for you" Somerset Maugham Maugham's saying is a good reminder that death is looming somewhere ready to strike the mortal that we Man are. And to some extent, God calls to Him those we prefer. He is the Omniscient and only He knows why. Let us idy was generous enough to come from Foundiougne up to Dakar just to give the 2010 ILEPers advice and orientation on the verge of their departure to the USA. Sidy was a personified example of generosity. To his widow, kids and his numerous friends everywhere in the World, to Sadibou Diouf (ILEP 2009),to one of his nephews (Sylla), to his students in Foundiougne and to ILEP staff, I express my deepest condolences.
