Annually around December 1, IREX mobilizes its broad array of programs and its overseas presence to focus on HIV/AIDS. With activities as diverse as Internet chats with HIV-positive persons in isolated regions, online forums for local medical personnel, and special seminars on HIV/AIDS for young people and for the educators who teach them, IREX combats HIV/AIDS with many approaches. We invite you to see our plans in each of the countries below.

Armenia
Seminar: World AIDS Day
Yerevan Educational Advising Center, December 1
Contemporary Issues Program alumni Gayane Ghukasyan and Zaruhi Mkrtchyan will conduct a presentation on their current project on AIDS prevention through education. In addition, they will introduce AIDS awareness materials produced by the National Center of AIDS Prevention and discuss general AIDS topics such as basic information on AIDS, the AIDS situation in Armenia, HIV transmission, and the means of protection from infection.

Seminar: The Situation with AIDS in Azerbaijan

Community Connections Program alumni who participated in the public health component of the program will conduct a seminar for USG alumni on the current state of AIDS in Azerbaijan.

IATP centers in Baku, Quba, Imishli, and Ali-Bayramli
With guests from the NGO AIDS Struggle, IATP staff at four sites will facilitate a seminar for youth on avoiding AIDS risks.

IATP access site, November 30
The IATP site staff will conduct an informational seminar on HIV infection for students of Poti Engineering-Economical Institute.
Seminar: AIDS and the Internet
Khashuri Central Library IATP access site, December 1
The IATP site administrator will introduce online materials about AIDS to the students of Khashuri University and students of secondary schools, and a physician from Khashuri Hospital will talk about AIDS problems, how to guard against AIDS, preventive measures, and prophylactic activities.

Guest presenter David Fruidze, the head of Kutaisi Immunology Center, will share facts and a professional perspective on the AIDS epidemic.
World AIDS Day: Discussion and Movie Night

The movie "Philadelphia" will be shown for ECA alumni and will be followed by a discussion conducted by AIDS specialist Kakha Akhvlediani of the HIV/AIDS NGO Tanadgoma.

Online Discussion: Raising AIDS Awareness among School Students
IATP sites nationwide, December 1
Lyudmila Ryazanova, the author of a distance learning course entitled "HIV/AIDS and Human Rights," will participate as a featured gues in an IATP-sponsored online discussion on raising awareness of AIDS among school students.

IATP access sites in Almaty and Uralsk, December 1
IATP administrators and alumni of US government-sponsored exchange programs will conduct specialized seminars on AIDS issues for school students and youth NGOs. World AIDS Day: Movie Night Alumni Resource Center, Almaty, December 1 USG alumni will watch a movie related to the AIDS topic, tentatively "Angels in America," and then discuss the AIDS situation in Kazakhstan and what the alumni community can do to raise awareness amongt their peers.
Art Contest: Best Photoshop Artwork or Best Poster on AIDS
Alumni Resource Center, Almaty, December 1
Alumni throughout Central Asia will attend trainings on Photoshop provided by the Internet Access and Training Program. Then they will search information on the Web about AIDS and create posters or artwork with Photoshop software using the information found on the Internet. The best artwork will be announced on December 1 and posted at www.alumni.kz.

IATP sites throughout Kyrgyzstan, November 15 to 26
Together with IATP trainings in computer and Internet basics throughout the country, IATP will hold a two-week contest on the best poster dedicated to World AIDS Day.
Online Discussion: HIV/AIDS and Drugs
IATP access sites throughout Kyrgyzstan, November 30
IATP will hold an online discussion on AIDS and drug issues with participation of Boris Shapiro, the head of Kyrgyzstan's National AIDS Centre, teachers, students, and health NGOs.

IATP access sites nationwide, December 1
Alumni of US government-sponsored exchange programs will hold discussions on AIDS and drug issues for users at IATP access sites. Alumni Lectures for High School Students Local high schools in Bishkek and Osh, December 1 Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program alumni from Bishkek and Osh will conduct several lectures about HIV/AIDS among local high school children. IREX will arrange for these alumni to receive advance training with AIDS specialists to ensure that the lectures are conducted professionally.
Internet Chat: The Impact of AIDS in the Life of the Infected

Online Forum: Preventing AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Cancer in Moldova

The online forum VIP.iatp.md will host local and foreign experts to draw citizens’ attention to diseases threatening Moldova, such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculoses (TB), and cancer. VIP guests, who will answer questions relating to the forum topics, will include:

Art Therapy Night: "Let's Be Open"

After watching and discussing a film about an HIV-positive Russian family, ECA alumni will have the possibility to express their impressions about the film and AIDS epidemic through art. IREX will provide the necessary utensils for the art therapy session and will later place the drawings online.

Veronica Susu of the Center for Preventive Medicine's HIV/AIDS Prevention Division and two anonymous HIV-infected individuals will speak about the ravaging effects of AIDS, discuss education about and tolerance for HIV/AIDS-infected people, and answer online chat participants’ questions.

Ion Ciobanul, president of the Esculap Association of medical doctors, will moderate a discussion in which participants will learn how to acquire online information about HIV/AIDS. The moderator will present some statistical data about the situation of HIV-infected individuals in Moldova.

IATP Comrat trainer Andrei Bejenari and a guest of the local Center of Family Doctors will moderate a discussion to teach participants about Internet resources about HIV/AIDS prevention.
Russia
Seminar: Combating AIDS Phobias in Samara
Samara, December 3
IREX will facilitate a seminar to bring together participants and host organizations of the US-Russia Volunteer Initiative Program (USRVI), which combats HIV/AIDS, and ECA alumni in Samara. Professional trainers from Population Services International (PSI), a USRVI host organization for two American volunteers working on HIV/AIDS prevention among youth in Samara, will conduct a training on AIDS phobia. PSI will introduce to ECA alumni the current HIV/AIDS statistics in Russia, information on HIV transmission in Russia, issues in HIV prevention and treatment, and what social issues arise in combating this disease, including phobia.

Moscow, December 18
Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program alumni from Moscow and Central Russia will come to Moscow for a one-day informational seminar to mark World AIDS Day. Segey Golubev, Contemporary Issues Program 2002 alumnus, will conduct an informational seminar for alumni about the situation with HIV/AIDS today, perspectives for the future, and problems that need to be solved. Golubev will conduct a training about volunteer projects that alumni can conduct in their cities to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Alumni will be encouraged by IREX to apply for Project Smile and the ECA Alumni Small Grants Program to realize these volunteer projects.
Tajikistan
Contest: Best World AIDS Day Website and Poster
IATP sites throughout Tajikistan, November 22 to December 3
Together with IATP trainings in computer and Internet basics throughout the country, IATP will hold a two-week nationwide contest on the best website and poster dedicated to AIDS and drugs issues.

IATP will hold a week-long contest on the best alumni article about AIDS to be placed on the alumni website.

IATP will host a two-hour online discussion with UNAIDS National Program Officer Mariya Boltayeva, Chairwoman Matluba Rahmonova of the Republican HIV/AIDS Center, teachers, students, and health NGOs.
IATP Campaign Against AIDS
IATP access sites nationwide, December 1
IATP will host a day-long anti-AIDS campaign, including seminars, presentations, demonstration of Web resources, and production of booklets and posters at IATP access sites throughout the country. This campaign will raise citizens’ awareness of the issue and urge them to take action to keep AIDS from spreading.

Contemporary Issues alumna Elnazarova Anjir will present an overview of the HIV/AIDS situation in Tajikistan, and Jason Bohoney, Tajikistan program director of Population Services International (PSI), will discuss HIV/AIDS as it applies to Tajik youth. Opportunities for youth mobilization will be discussed, and IREX will encourage alumni to apply for Project Smile and the ECA Alumni Small Grants Program to design and implement volunteer projects related to HIV/AIDS.
