IREX welcomes the observance of International Education Week, November 15 to 19. We have initiated a broad array of events to celebrate and share our experiences—with activities as diverse as sharing the Internet with orphans and Junior Achievement students to enlarge their worlds, helping teachers exchange best practices across national borders, and assisting foreign students experience education in the United States—and we invite you to see our plans in each of the countries below.

Armenia
Internet Forum: International Education
IATP sites nationwide, November 15 to 19
IATP will sponsor a countrywide forum on International Education, which will not only enable alumni of different programs to share their experiences and ask questions to each other, but also enable students and the general public to log in and ask questions to alumni about programs and their exchange experience.
Presentation: The US Exchange Program Experience
Yerevan School No.8, November 15
Alumni of the Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program will visit a local school to discuss the US exchange program experience. In addition, they will play games and celebrate creativity with local students.
Seminar: IREX Educational Programs and Community Service Opportunities
Yerevan Educational Advising Center, November 15
The Yerevan Educational Advising Center (EAC) will host IREX country manager Arina Zohrabian, US embassy assistant public affairs officer Rian Harris, and EAC senior educational advisor Gayane Grigoryan, who will share perspectives on education programs. Internet Access and Training Program staff will present an overview of IREX programs in Armenia. Following the presentation, participants will discuss encouraging community service in Armenia, building on the experience of IREX Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program alumni, who conduct community service in the United States as part of their fellowships.

IATP will host US Ambassador to Armenia John M. Evans for a nationwide Internet discussion on international education and exchanges.
Community Service Day
Yerevan Educational Advising Center (EAC), November 17, 2004
The Yerevan EAC will host a special community service event aimed at encouraging community service in Armenia. Based on the experience of Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program alumni, who perform community service as part of their fellowships, IREX plans to take volunteers and students to spend a morning at the Nork Marash Retirement Home in Yerevan, where they will conduct activities with the residents.

The TPL IATP access site in Telavi will conduct an informational seminar for pupils from local schools.
Essay Competition: International Education and Developing Countries: Benefits and Shortomings
IREX Tbilisi office, November 19
The IREX Tbilisi office will organzie an essay competition for alumni of the Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD). The essays will be reviewed by a committee consisting of US Peace Corps volunteer Edward Raupp and UGRAD alumni. Three top-listed alumni will be given funds to take distance learning courses in topics such as creating a successful business plan, fundamentals of supervision and management, and project management fundamentals (offered by California State University-San Marcos).

Kazakhstan
Seminars and Lectures on Study Abroad
Alumni Resource Center, November 15 to 19
The Alumni Resource Center will sponsor several seminars and lectures on topics associated with study abroad, including:
* Opportunities for study abroad. Alumni of the Future Leaders Exchange Program and Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange (UGRAD) Program will invite representatives from various embassies to present the programs for udergraduate and master's education that are offered for citizens of Kazakhstan. Alumni will organize a presentation on UGRAD and the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program.
* Test preparation. Alumni will conduct training on preparing for the TOFEL, GMAT, GRE, and LSAT examinations using the Internet.
* Online research. Alumni will conduct a presentation about ECA exchange programs and share tips on researching scholarships online.
* Alumni activities. Alumni will review the alumni.state.gov site, promoting USG alumni website resources and inviting all alumni to register online.

IREX, together with PAS and ACIE, will invite representatives of international and local companies and NGOs to conduct presentations of job opportunities that are available for ECA alumni. ECA alumni will have the opportunity to contact their potential employees at the event and distribute resumes.
Kyrgyzstan
Online Chat: Applying to US Universities

A Peace Corps volunteer, with assistance from USG alumni, will conducting an online chat for high school and university students on applying to US universities.
Author Presentation: Study in the United States
Bishkek Educational Advising Center, November 16
Contemporary Issues alumna Chinara Omurkulova will moderate a discussion with the authors of the book Study in the United States, which was written by alumni of USG programs as well as students who applied on their own to study in the United States. The publication was possible thanks to awards from ETS. Center visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the experience of applying to US schools as well as US academic life.
Internet Chat: The New Credit System for Kyrgyzstani Universities

Representative from the Ministry of Education will be joining a chat for university faculty to discuss the newly-introduced credit system in the Kyrgyzstani universities within the Bologna Process.

The IREX Bishkek office will hold a roundtable discussion with directors of professional schools in Bishkek. They will be discussing the problems and the process of reforming professional schools in Kyrgyzstan. Adyl Taylakov of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection will moderate the discussion.
Outreach Lecture: "Study in the United States"
Bishkek Educational Institutions, November 18 and 19
Educational Advising Center staff and alumni of USG programs will conduct a general lecture entitled "Study in the United States" at High School No. 70 and Bishkek Humanitarian University. After the lecture, education advisers and alumni of USG programs will hold a question-and-answer session about their experience of study in the United States and how it changed their life.

IATP will describe IATP services for teachers and for educational managers and address the use of information technology in undergraduate education. Participants will discuss opinions on various aspects of contemporary education in Moldova and throughout the world today.
Online Conference: Information Society in Education and Science
IATP sited in Moldova and Ukraine, November 17
Alumni, nonalumni educators, and representatives of the US Embassy Public Affairs Section will meet online to discuss subjects such as human resources in education and science, integration into European standards and methodologies, and funding opportunities. The conference will begin to unify the efforts of Moldova and Ukraine on common subjects and problems by facilitating useful and practical outcomes.

Representatives from cultural centers of the United States, Turkey, Sweden, Japan, France and other European countries will discuss the education systems in their homelands and the methods of educating future leaders.

Outreach to Young Students: Alumni Share Experiences
Moscow schools, November 15 to 19
Alumni of the Eurasian Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD) will visit Moscow middle and high schools to speak with young Russians about their experiences studying in the United States, what they learned, and their general impressions about the differences in the two systems of education. UGRAD alumni will encourage their audiences to study foreign languages and will offer information on the Moscow Education Information Center for anyone interested in studying in the United States.

The Moscow Educational Advising Center (EAC) advisor will describe the structure of US education system and will provide tips on how to choose a college or university in the United States. Participants will learn about application process for US schools, obtain information on required standardized testing, and get acquainted with the resources available at the EAC. This presentation is a joint event of the EAC and Dinternal staff.

Sikochi Anywhere, currently a senior at Middleburry College who is studying for a semester at the Russian State University for the Humanities, will give a presentation on the peculiarities of education in the United States, Russia, and Zimbabwe. Sikochi won a United States Achievers Program (USAP) award held at the local advising center in Zimbabwe.
Panel Discussion: Thoughts from American Exchange Students

American exchange students John Hogg (a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh), Sarah Hickey (a sophomore at Wisconsin State University), and Kesley Zahorick (a junior at Iowa State University) will share their experiences as exchange students in Russia. They will also talk about the education system in the United States and the impact that their international educational experiences have had on their careers and lives. Russian students will be their audience.
