IREX condemns the assassination of An-Nahar publisher Gebran Tueni and extends condolences to his family, his colleagues at An-Nahar, and to the people of Lebanon.
An-Nahar, led by Gebran Tueni, has been at the forefront of independent media not only in Lebanon, but in the entire region. Under the leadership of Gebran Tueni, An-Nahar continued to solidify its reputation for excellence that his father, Ghassan Tueni, had instilled at the paper. In a society fractured by civil war, religious, political, and ethnic divides, An-Nahar and Gebran sought to provide balanced, rational, and productive news and commentary to the people of Lebanon.
