IREX congratulates educator Randy Malamud for his recent opinion piece published in The Chronicle of Higher Education, the premiere publication of the higher education sector.
Malamud, a Regents’ professor and chair of the English department at Georgia State University, worked with IREX’s Iraq University Linkages Program to help bring reform to an educational infrastructure beset by war and corruption. He led workshops with Iraqi educators and administrators at the University of Dohuk and the University of Baghdad.
“The lives of Iraqi academics…are profoundly depressing, but at the same time, amazingly vital,” Malamud writes. “Life goes on. With inexhaustible hospitality, the scholars I met told me how thankful they were that I had come to spend time with them.”
Malamud offers insight into the critical issues troubling Iraq’s education reform efforts. He also tells the story of brave Iraqis he met who risk violence and danger every day in pursuit of better education for their country’s citizens. IREX believes education is a key part of a complex solution that will allow Iraqis to focus on a better future.
