Assaulted Iraqi Journalist's Triumphant Return

Iraqi journalist Imad al Ibadi, a vocal campaigner on exposing corruption and promoting free and fair elections, was shot three times in the head, neck, and chest on November 23, 2009. As a recipient of IREX media training and director of Al Diyar TV, Ibadi used his TV program on Iraqi politics and current affairs as a platform for defending freedom of the press, while attacking the excesses of the Iraqi security forces and government corruption.
After learning about the assassination attempt, IREX worked closely with the US Embassy to assist with arranging Ibadi’s medical care. In December, he was transferred to Germany for further treatment. On May 3, 2010, Ibadi— who miraculously appears to be in good health—made a triumphant return to Iraq to mark World Press Freedom Day. IREX continues to work with Ibadi and Al Diyar TV to support press freedoms and anti-corruption efforts in Iraq.
