Al Abdullah was recognized for his leadership in promoting justice and accountability for Syria. |

IREX is pleased to launch a new video showcasing the Syrian Justice and Accountability Center (SJAC). The documentary titled “Justice for Syria” details the story of Mohammad Al Abdallah, a Syrian human rights and democracy activist, who is working to document human rights abuses in Syria. Through the creation of the SJAC, and the support of IREX, Al Abdallah works to capture the events in Syria to eventually achieve justice for victims of human rights abuses. |

Increased coverage of gender-based violence (GBV) as a weapon of war often narrowly portrays women's participation in conflict solely as victims. While the incidences and impact of GBV on women’s, girls', boys' and men's lives cannot be understated, a balanced examination of conflict must also acknowledge the larger roles that women play. Tuesday June 11, 2013 9:30 - 11:00am join IREX, ICAN and a panel of experts to broaden the discussion of women in the Syrian conflict to also include their contributions as leaders, dividers, and connectors. |

“You know there’s hundreds of thousands of girls like you, you’re not alone in this revolution,” Ms. Yaman Al Qadri, then 18, reminded herself after being arrested by police, detained, and tortured with electric shocks. Al Qadri, a peaceful Syrian activist, was held in detention for 23 days in 2011 for throwing pamphlets from the roof of a Damascus University building. While extraordinary, countless Syrian women share similar experiences, efforts, and determination. Along with the mounting lessons from history, this brings to light an important truth: Mainstreaming women’s voices is critical to the inclusive transition that Syria needs. |

Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a serious and significant dimension of the conflict in Syria. The Syria Justice and Accountability Center (SJAC) recognizes the unique challenges this presents and is prioritizing training and documentation around SGBV. Documenting these crimes is important, but unfortunately they are especially difficult to prosecute. |

When the Syrian regime shot its first bullet at peaceful demonstrators on March 18, 2011 in Daraa, it lost its legitimacy and became a burden on the country, the people, the region, and the world. Democratic transition for Syria will happen. It is only the timeline that is unclear. |

IREX is pleased to share the U.S. Department of State Media Note announcing international support for The Syria Justice and Accountability Center at a recent donors conference in Rabat, Morocco. Forty governments and organizations came together to condem the grave human rights violations committed against the Syrian people and called for an end to the violence. They pledged more than $3 million to support the Center. |
