In Morocco, disability rights are not the highest priority issues for the government, but a local NGO, the Regional Union for Disability Associations, is changing that with the support of IREX and its partner, the World Institute for Disabilities (WID).  Regional Union recently won four  government grants to support people with disabilities. The largest of these grants could help build hundreds of RoughRider wheelchairs that are well-suited for Morocco’s varied terrain.

Youth were marginalized for years in the Arab countries. Considered a source of instability, they were ignored by governments and excluded from the decision-making processes that affected their lives. But something has happened in the last year. Aware that if they don’t initiate change themselves for a better future, then no one will, they took the lead in Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Morocco, and other Arab states. But it seems that revolutions are the easiest part. The transitional period and the establishment of a sustainable democracy is another tremendous challenge for youth. The regime collapsed … and so what?

Language transcends borders. That’s why I began studying Arabic six years ago. But when I met with female activists in a café in Fez yesterday, we used three (plus) languages to discuss challenges facing youth in Morocco. I asked questions in classical Arabic or fus-ha, and they answered in French with interludes in the local Moroccan dialect — an amalgam of Berber, fus-ha, and French. I summarized in fus-ha what I had pieced together, and they confirmed my accuracy with nods and giggles.
