Much environmental research starts with a problem, such as species extinction, global warming, or erosion. In honor of Earth Day, IREX is pleased share a story of two physics teachers from India and a graduate student from Alabama focused on a solution. Rahul Chatterjee and Bishakha Banerjee, current International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) participants, are collaborating with Melanie Phillips, a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), to research reforestation in Chhattisgarh and Punjab, India using satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques.

An ILEP Alumna will co-host a webinar on population growth on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at 10:00 am EST. In October 2011, the world population reached 7 billion. What does this mean for people around the world? Primary Source is proud to partner with IREX in offering this webinar. Mytheli Sreenivas, Associate Professor of History and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Ohio State University, and Archana Mankotia, ILEP alumna and social studies teacher in India, will share with us their insights and perspectives on population growth in India.

Through the Teachers for Global Classrooms program, IREX supports US teachers in their efforts to internationalize their classrooms, effectively reach their diverse students, and continually enhance their teaching practice.

In a slum near Kolkata, India, young children dream about their future. Eleven-year old Shaher wants to be a doctor. “I would like to work in the court,” says 10-year-old Imran. Thanks to the work of Hasnain Imam, a local teacher, these children now have access to basic education that can bring them that much closer to a successful future.
