A decade after online media began sapping the advertising revenue of traditional outlets in the West, these same trends are now washing across the region to the east, undermining business models as they go.

IREX Commemorates 15 Years of Building Independent Media in Serbia

IREX and USAID commemorated the close of the Serbian Media Assistance Program, marking 15 years of United States media support in Serbia, with a conference in Belgrade attended by representatives of the media, the American and Serbian governments, and international institutions and donors.

This week IREX and USAID will hold a closeout conference for the Serbia Media Assistance Program in Belgrade. Watch the livestream here Thursday, November 1 from 4:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST and Friday, November 2 from 4:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST. Topics covered will include contemporary media law, media strategy and its implementation, media freedom, investigative journalism, social media for journalists, media market and trends, media literacy, and preconditions and critical issues for media development in Serbia.

Serbian language station TV Puls began broadcasting the Kosovo Assembly earlier

TV Puls, a local Serb language TV station in Kosovo supported by USAID and IREX, went live last week with coverage of the Kosovo National Assembly. The broadcasts signaled an important technical and editorial breakthrough for Serbian language media in Kosovo and showed their increasing willingness to engage with the institutions of Kosovo government.

Human trafficking, drug trade, police reform, and corporate graft were among the diverse topics debated and discussed by ten up-and-coming scholars at the 2012 IREX/WWC Regional Policy Symposium, "Transnational Crime and Corruption in Eastern Europe and Eurasia." Transnational criminal networks, and the domestic corruption that feeds them, represent one of the major foreign policy challenges facing the United States today.

Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia

The 2012 edition of IREX’s Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia measures the struggles and triumphs of the media sector in 21 transitioning countries from Croatia to Kazakhstan. Evidence from local media experts shows overall stability in the media sector. Increasing use of digital and social media gives hope for expanding freedom of expression. However, reported backsliding in several countries, partly due to the increased political control of media, concerns the experts.

Ten years ago, Vesna Dobrosavljevic was a budding Serbian radio journalist enrolled in the IREX Summer School for radio production in Kotor, Montenegro. Today, she is the information and business website editor for B92 Radio (Serbia’s leading independent news outlet) and more importantly, a qualified trainer herself lending expertise to the next generation of Serbian journalists.

An hour and a half scenic drive through the mountains from Skopje, Macedonia, is situated beautiful Prilep, a town of about 65,000 people. I travelled there to interview Nesime Salioska, the founder of the NGO ‘Roma SOS...’ Her vision and that of Roma SOS “is to create opportunities for the Romani community to become equal citizens with equal rights and opportunities in society”.
