IREX’s latest Europe & Eurasia Media Sustainability Index (MSI) finds that new media sources are rapidly replacing traditional outlets as the preferred source of news. A decade after online media began sapping the advertising revenue of traditional outlets in the West, these same trends are now washing across the region to the east, undermining business models as they go.

In tight budget environments it is tempting to view ICT equipment and training as a luxury to cut. We can all think of a case where technology for technology’s sake hasn’t worked: an unused laptop in the corner of an overfilled classroom, an interactive whiteboard at a school without adequate electricity to support its use, a smartphone game developed for a population of youth without access to smartphones. 

In fact, now is the time for a focus on smart technology integration in all levels of education.

Drama Club uses theater to create community dialogue about youth and violence

“I used to be kind of a problem kid,” chuckled Erzhan Kubat-uulu, a high school student in Kyrgyzstan’s isolated northwestern province of Talas, “My parents were often asked to come to school because of my behavior.”

Stacey Padilla, a student at Maryville College in Tennessee, and 2011 Global UGRAD alumna Aidai Kozhalieva from Kyrgyzstan partnered to enrich the lives of Kyrgyz children in the rural village of Ananievo. After two weeks of learning English and participating in theater workshops in the Ananievo Children’s Theatre (ACT) summer camp, children traveled to the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek. There they performed Pushing up the Sky, a Native American play about working together despite cultural differences to overcome a shared problem.

UGRAD Student volunteers

Five Global UGRAD students at the University of Louisiana at Monroe recently experienced the impact of collective action in their host community. Iurii (Ukraine), Begaiym (Kyrgyzstan), Radu (Moldova), Jasurbek (Uzbekistan), and Dinara (Kazakhstan) collected more than 200 pounds of trash as volunteers during the 7th Annual Ouachita River Sweep.

KICK emphasizes sports as a medium for conflict management and promoting mutual understanding. Through the program, coaches and youth from different regions and ethnic and religious backgrounds in Kyrgyzstan engage in conversations about gender and sports and come to acknowledge that many of the benefits for boys are just as relevant for girls.  In addition, they identified the impact that increased physical ability and confidence can have in reducing girls’ vulnerability against attack and abuse from a stranger or a loved one.

Youth Leadership for Peace Theater Troupe at Jashtar Camp 2012

Recently, the Youth Leadership for Peace (YLP) Theater Troupe brought national attention to youth-led peacebuilding efforts in Kyrgyzstan with a forum theater performance in Bishkek. Performing for an audience of youth and adults at the annual Jashtar Camp youth conference, the Theater Troupe created dialogue around issues of rural unemployment and youth alcohol abuse while also showcasing the leadership role that youth are playing in conflict prevention.

Tech Age Girls Bridging the Gender Digital Divide

Seven years ago, Anastasiya Buchok of Uzbekistan took the first step to learn about technology and participated in IREX’s Tech Age Girls (TAG) program. Today, thanks to that initial spark, she has a successful career working for a major software company.

While not all TAG alumni go into IT careers, all of them gain better skills and access to technology for everyday use at school and work. This project helps to close a “gender digital divide” that is sometimes attributed to girls’ reports of less positive attitudes and self-efficacy toward ICT than boys.
