IREX’s latest Europe & Eurasia Media Sustainability Index (MSI) finds that new media sources are rapidly replacing traditional outlets as the preferred source of news. A decade after online media began sapping the advertising revenue of traditional outlets in the West, these same trends are now washing across the region to the east, undermining business models as they go. |

Young Azerbaijani women with an interest in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) celebrated their achievements at a special conference in Baku on April 25th, entitled “Girls in ICT Day.” Hosted by IREX, with a keynote speech from a representative of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Education, the conference highlighted the contribution of young women working in the ICT field and awarded prizes for the winners of Tech Age Girls project. |

Muskie alumnus Mikayil Jabbarov of Azerbaijan was recently appointed Education Minister for the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In his new position, Jabbarov leads the Ministry and its Deputy Ministers in forming and implementing national Education policies and initiatives. |

In 2011, IREX implemented "Camera as Voice" training with the goal of empowering Azerbaijani women to express themselves through film making. More than 100 girls from across 10 regions in Azerbaijan attended and began engaging in conversations surrounding critical issues, through documentary film making. Watch how 14-year-old Aytan, participant in the 'Camera as Voice' training is now following her dream of becoming a film maker and breaking down barriers. |

Whether the villagers want to prepare for an exam, learn more about childcare, health issues, farming or just to knit a sweater, all this and more is available when they sit down at the Internet kiosk in Fatalikand’s post office. They have free access to Internet thanks to IREX Azerbaijan’s Electronic Village project. They are using a purpose-built computer kiosk installed at the local post office last October. The manager of the post office is trained to help visitors browse the Internet and encourage them to explore the world online. |

IREX congratulates Sevinj Mammadova, February's International Exchange Alumni Member of the Month. The U.S. Department of State selected her from among a pool of more than one million Department-sponsored exchange program alumni for her recent work in education policy. In Azerbaijan she is serving as the head of Education Division at the country's Central Bank.She was once a participant of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program and then the Muskie Program, both implemented by IREX. |

Remote villagers across Azerbaijan now have access to free Internet at 30 community-centered kiosks installed throughout the region. The kiosks offer an invaluable bridge to people and places far away, and give villagers the opportunity to reach further and access more than ever before. |

Nine professional journalists and university lecturers from Azerbaijan, awarded a media fellowship by IREX, are on a study tour in the United States of America. They are learning about online news platforms and social media to inform new media courses they will teach upon returning home. |

Seven years ago, Anastasiya Buchok of Uzbekistan took the first step to learn about technology and participated in IREX’s Tech Age Girls (TAG) program. Today, thanks to that initial spark, she has a successful career working for a major software company. While not all TAG alumni go into IT careers, all of them gain better skills and access to technology for everyday use at school and work. This project helps to close a “gender digital divide” that is sometimes attributed to girls’ reports of less positive attitudes and self-efficacy toward ICT than boys. |

Remote villages in 29 districts across Azerbaijan now have free Internet access thanks to the USAID-funded Azerbaijan New Media Project. Although online access in the country is growing, Internet services remain slow and expensive, particularly in the rural areas. Most citizens can only access the Web in cafés, Internet clubs or at work. To help bridge the gap, USAID and IREX partnered with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies (MCIT) to install free Internet kiosks in 30 local post offices. |
