IREX’s latest Europe & Eurasia Media Sustainability Index (MSI) finds that new media sources are rapidly replacing traditional outlets as the preferred source of news. A decade after online media began sapping the advertising revenue of traditional outlets in the West, these same trends are now washing across the region to the east, undermining business models as they go.

IREX congratulates 2013 U.S. Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS) fellow Matthew Rojansky on his new role as Director of the Kennan Institute, division of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars that focuses on Russia, Ukraine and other states in the region. Mr. Rojansky will lead the Kennan Institute’s efforts to publicize and integrate new research on the region into the policy community through scholarships, lectures, workshops, and publication programs.

In honor of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21 and the campaign to “do one thing for diversity,” IREX is pleased to highlight the recent efforts of two Russian students,  Anastasia and Alina,  who coordinated events promoting tolerance and cultural awareness in their home communities. Both students are alumni of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, implemented by IREX.

Q & A with Dr. Jeanine Braithwaite, a Professor of Public Policy at the University of Virginia and Senior Economist at the World Bank, who launched her career as an IREX research scholar in the Long-Term Research Program in the Soviet Union from 1987 to 1988.

In the midst of a global youth unemployment crisis, young people in Russia are working to strengthen their job prospects upon graduation from college. What began as a small youth-led project has grown into a new way of doing things at Tambov State Technical University, and the start of successful careers for hundreds of youth in the region.

Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, welcomed more than 150 international youth leaders to the U.S. to begin academic and cultural programs at more than 80 universities and colleges across the U.S.country as part of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan and Global UGRAD in Eurasia and Central Asia programs. Ms. Stock reminded the students that they are citizen ambassadors for their countries, who “will leave a remarkable impact” on their host communities, building relationships “that can and should last.”

A high-level advisor to Russia's Presidents recently worked with IREX and media lawyers to help discern a new set of Internet laws. In a country that Freedom House rates as one with no free press, the meeting was a significant event for all involved.

Human trafficking, drug trade, police reform, and corporate graft were among the diverse topics debated and discussed by ten up-and-coming scholars at the 2012 IREX/WWC Regional Policy Symposium, "Transnational Crime and Corruption in Eastern Europe and Eurasia." Transnational criminal networks, and the domestic corruption that feeds them, represent one of the major foreign policy challenges facing the United States today.
