IREX Supports the Digital and Physical Security of Journalists Every year dozens of journalists are killed for simply seeking to report the truth. Thousands face violence, threats, harassment, and retaliations against their families and employers. Most of these crimes against journalists go unsolved and unpunished. This year's World Press Freedom Day recognizes these challenges to both professional and citizen journalists by focusing on journalists' physical and digital security under the theme, Safe to Speak. IREX has a long commitment to supporting free media and protecting the safety of journalists. |

This year’s official celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Tunisia brought together over 700 media professionals, freedom of expression advocates, and development experts to discuss key trends in media freedom globally. IREX again played a key role. |

Using the global World Press Freedom Day theme, New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies 115 participants from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast came together to assess the level of press freedom in the region and discuss the important role of the media in the reconstruction process in each of the three countries. |

Journalists, journalism students and activists from Jordan and Lebanon who came together to learn about using online tools to raise public awareness about issues, immediately put their experience to work to promote the importance of press freedom. To commemorate World Press Freedom Day they produced viral posters and videos and formed a Facebook group to sustain their efforts. |

The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2012 is “New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies.” The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Tunisia are organizing this year’s commemoration in Tunis, Tunisia May 3-5, 2012. IREX is pleased to continue supporting this important event this year by sponsoring a panel on novel ways to gather and share news that give voice to citizens and reach new audiences.
