At church on the morning of January 28, 2011 the pastor joked that “Thanks to the Egyptian government we will not be interrupted by cell phones.” But on that Friday despite the cutoff of Internet, cell phones and SMS messages feeding into Twitter, the largest demonstrations blocked downtown Cairo causing the police to close the square.

Al Akhbar recently published 25,000 copies of its first-ever local edition, Alexandria News supplement, in Alexandria, Egypt. The four-page supplement tackled municipal issues, addressed local economic concerns, and invited readers to participate by commenting on salient topics. The publication employs an innovative new design, devoting more space to news pictures and seizing attention through illustrative presentations.

Blogging and other participatory new media techniques and their connection with production of local news content were the focus of a recent three-day training course for Egyptian journalists run by Cairo University and jointly supported by two USAID-funded IREX projects in Egypt, the Media Development Program (MDP) and the Partnership Program for Democracy and Governance (PPDG).

The Media Development Program (MDP) in Egypt marked its first anniversary with a daylong conference on the impact of industry innovations. Attended by several hundred media professionals, the Cairo event focused on changes within the media sectors of Egypt, the Middle East, and worldwide.
