Building on the knowledge and skills he gained through the LEAD program, Mirzoev returned to Tajikistan in 2011 and created an international law firm designed to assist companies looking to invest in Tajikistan. |

Mansur Ganiev has learned that to strengthen the legal system in Tajikistan, he must work for those most underserved to understand their legal rights. An alumnus of the Legal Education and Development Short-Term English Program (LEAD STEP), Ganiev returned to his home country a few months ago and wasted no time in implementing change to strengthen the criminal justice system and the rule of law. |

Saidahmad Ikromov defies the stereotype of the sober law student buried under a mound of case law books. He has stepped outside the classroom to link academia to real world practice in order to serve the community surrounding the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Ikromov has contributed more than 50 hours of free legal assistance to lower income, unemployed, and underprivileged individuals at community Citizenship Fairs in the fall and spring and at the McGeorge School of Law’s Elder Law Clinic. |

Twelve lawyers from Tajikistan became the first participants of a new five-month U.S.-based training program that will enable them to make lasting positive changes to their country’s legal system. Through the Legal Education and Development Short-Term English Program (LEAD STEP), these individuals are cultivating skills in English and knowledge of comparative law that they will use to shape the dynamic legal landscape in Tajikistan, strengthen the rule of law, and foster ties with the international legal community. |

Mufara Hamidova provides legal assistance to women in Tajikistan on issues ranging from domestic violence to early marriage. As a manager at the League of Women Lawyers of Tajikistan, she addresses domestic issues through litigation and mediation and also uses media and trainings to inform community groups about the legal status of young girls getting married and the legal and psychological consequences of early marriage. |

During her recent tour of Central Asia, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with dozens of current or rising leaders in civil society, government, and the private sector in Tajikistan. Secretary Clinton held a town hall meeting with women, youth, and civil society in the capital of Dushanbe, leading discussion on the collaboration between the U.S. and Tajikistan, along with issues such as regional security and job promotion for youth. |

Twenty years after Tajikistan gained independence, Farrukhjon Ibrohimov will return from a fellowship in the US equipped to help shape his country’s nascent legal system. After completing his Master’s in Law (LLM) at the University of Connecticut this month, Ibrohimov, a lawyer in the capital of Dushanbe, plans to strengthen the rule of law there by sharing the tools, knowledge, and networks he has honed in the US. |
