Residents of Karak, a small city in southern Jordan, traditionally have had little media to provide local news and information. Now, however, they hear the sounds of Sawt Al-Karak FM, the Voice of Karak, a new community radio station at Mutah University launched with the support of IREX to support an already politically active citizenry. |

When the Jordan Media Strengthening Program (JMSP) launched, in 2006, there was one single, albeit vibrant, community radio station in Jordan. Today, there are five, producing and broadcasting a variety of original formats geared toward local audiences. With JMSP’s assistance, the five stations have been cooperating on a news syndicate project and are currently establishing an independent federation of community radio broadcasters. |

Citizen journalists and even professionals in Jordan are often ill-equipped to serve as both advocates and reporters of the news. Furthermore, though there are a number of well-regarded bloggers in Jordan and throughout the Arab world, they are not all considered to be reputable sources of information. |

IREX's Jordan Media Strengthening Program on May 3 will launch the Jordan News Media Stylebook. The comprehensive style guide--it covers print, broadcast, and online media--was produced for the Get Out the Vote Campaign ahead of the 2007 parliamentary elections and for a parliamentary TV show. |

The recently released second edition of the Jordan Media Survey includes significant findings on Internet usage—including a 100 percent increase in Internet use over last year’s figures—as well as on the most popular online news sources. The survey, prepared by IREX’s Jordan Media Strengthening Program, is much-anticipated in a media environment where independent and scientific market research has long been an unaffordable luxury for scores of independent radio stations, newspapers, and new media outlets. |

According to the Government of Jordan, “rapidly expanding population, industrial pollution, wildlife hunting and habitat loss due to development” pose a serious threat to water quality, wildlife, and its land. As the government states, “A true foundation of environmental protection requires awareness upon the part of the population…” |

Greyscale, a dynamic publishing and production company, is launching a new and innovative web-based television channel in Jordan with IREX support. As Jordan’s first WEB TV channel, this citizens’ journalism project will create an Arabic language platform, offering video clips and features on Jordanian popular current events, targeting youth but appealing also to older age groups. |

There is an important relationship between the direction of media outlets and their strategies for viability. A strong marketing division allows editors and journalists to fully focus on journalistic excellence. In late January, 16 sales and marketing managers from various Jordanian media outlets attended a training to enhance their skills. The “Sales and Marketing Workshop,” implemented by IREX in collaboration with Arab Mass Media Center, was designed to help media professionals and their organizations increase advertising revenue to help foster a more sustainable and independent media. |

Community radio emphasizes access, participation, volunteerism and simplicity in overcoming the technical and financial hurdles that keep people from avenues of information and communication. |
