Ukrainian organizations are taking advantage of new technology to engage citizens in rural areas. With almost a third of the Ukrainian population living in rural locations, it can be difficult even for Ukrainian NGOs to support and represent those outside of urban and regional centers. Recently, Ukrainian NGOs in the city of Dnipropetrovsk have begun piloting projects using mobile phone technology to promote social change amongst a wider population.

The Republic of Georgia’s economic downturn, combined with the repercussions of the military conflict with Russia, left Batumi resident Nikoloz Namgalauri struggling to find employment. He harbored an interest in launching his own business in the beauty industry, and the idea might’ve been just a fantasy if it weren’t for the legal and practical logistics he knew he could find with the help of his local Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) center, managed by IREX and funded by USAID.

After completing ICT training for government officials in January, Senior Officer of Zaporizhya, Ukraine’s Family Issues and Adoption Department Irina Voloshko is using new skills to streamline her workplace. Earlier, the city administration asked staff at the IREX-implemented Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) to train eight government officials as part of its e-Government initiative in Ukraine.

Public health expert Pavlo Kovtoniuk from Zhytomyr, Ukraine was recognized for his outstanding collaborative blog on public health issues. The blog, which Kovtoniuk created and manages, was rated the sixth out of 30 nominees for “Best Professional Blog” at the Best Ukrainian Blog Contest 2008 in October. An active user and volunteer at his local IREX-managed internet center since the facility’s opening, Kovtoniuk created the resource to share his and others’ views on the healthcare system in Ukraine, its future development, and ways to improve it.

Thanks in part to IREX technical training, disabled citizens from Turkmenabat, Turkmenistan are becoming entrepreneurs empowered to obtain the assistance they need. In recent months, Samuil Lavskiy, a leader of the disabled community in Turkmenabat, cooperated with local entrepreneurs to open several businesses. These enterprises have had a positive impact on the local community and are currently employing 18 people with disabilities.
