Soccer is the most popular sport in many countries, and for the children in Tyr, Lebanon, that is no different. However, soccer fields are few and far between, and the rare and valuable playing space can only be reserved for a fee leaving the local youth few places to gather and play. Now they have a field of their own. With funding and support from the One Community program, the Cadmous Christian School and the Islamic Charity Organization gathered local Christian, Sunni and Shia children to build a soccer field on the grounds of the school.

Youth Promote Religious Tolerance Through Community Service in Lebanon

More than 40 religious leaders, activists and journalists in Lebanon recently came together to exchange best practices and to support one another with their recently started community projects to promote religious tolerance. IREX is pleased to give a sneak peek of three of these projects and look forward to sharing their success once the projects are completed.

Youth journalist Samir Sabbagh is changing perceptions about the roles youth and religious leaders can play in promoting peace in south Lebanon. Working with the Lebanese youth organization Nahar Ashabab, Samir participates in IREX’s One Community program that provides interfaith training to religious leaders from across Lebanon and supports their interfaith community development projects.

Religious leaders of various faiths in Lebanon recently put doctrinal differences aside to focus on peace and development in their communities. Although the country’s civil war ended more than two decades ago, strong divisions and episodes of violent clashes along religious lines still exist. The rare public gathering of local Sunni, Shiite and Christian leaders was a result of IREX’s One Community Project and signaled a positive step toward peace for citizens of conflict-prone cities like Baalbak, Tripoli and Tyr.
