Whether the villagers want to prepare for an exam, learn more about childcare, health issues, farming or just to knit a sweater, all this and more is available when they sit down at the Internet kiosk in Fatalikand’s post office. They have free access to Internet thanks to IREX Azerbaijan’s Electronic Village project. They are using a purpose-built computer kiosk installed at the local post office last October. The manager of the post office is trained to help visitors browse the Internet and encourage them to explore the world online. |

Eleven people in Goychay learned how to set up blogs last week, during training organized by IREX and its partner Regional Cooperation and Community Development Center (RCCDC). The new bloggers are high school teachers, engineers and high school students. |

Remote villagers across Azerbaijan now have access to free Internet at 30 community-centered kiosks installed throughout the region. The kiosks offer an invaluable bridge to people and places far away, and give villagers the opportunity to reach further and access more than ever before. |

Nine professional journalists and university lecturers from Azerbaijan, awarded a media fellowship by IREX, are on a study tour in the United States of America. They are learning about online news platforms and social media to inform new media courses they will teach upon returning home. |

Remote villages in 29 districts across Azerbaijan now have free Internet access thanks to the USAID-funded Azerbaijan New Media Project. Although online access in the country is growing, Internet services remain slow and expensive, particularly in the rural areas. Most citizens can only access the Web in cafés, Internet clubs or at work. To help bridge the gap, USAID and IREX partnered with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies (MCIT) to install free Internet kiosks in 30 local post offices. |

Across Azerbaijan there are 19 Community Information Centers newly graduated from United States government support to being fully operated by local NGOs. Although Internet access in Azerbaijan is growing, Internet services, particularly in the regions, remain expensive and much of the country’s Internet usage takes place in Internet clubs or at the workplace. To help bridge the gap, IREX, with support from USAID, partnered with local organizations and equipped 19 centers with computers, internet access and Wi-Fi spots. The centers offer courses and internet access to users, free of charge. |

On behalf of IREX, I am pleased to announce that 22 diligent Azerbaijani students and their mentors won netbooks and flipcameras in a recent national contest for the ‘Best Research Essays Using Internet.' One hundred and sixty nine candidates entered from all over the country, notably Sumgait, Guba, Shirvan, Imishli, Ganja, Gazakh, Sheki, Zagatala, Ismayilli and Mingachevir. Plagiarism was penalised, with positive results. |
