Washington, DC – Today IREX received a new grant from the United States Institute of Peace, which will expand its peacebuilding activities in Kyrgyzstan. With this funding, IREX will train and support youth and adults to create peer mediation programs in schools and establish and support a multi-ethnic youth theater performance troupe.

“Strangers used to scare me, and it usually took quite awhile before I would talk to new people,” explains Jarkynay Yrysbek kyzy, a high school student from Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan, a city that experienced violent ethnic clashes during the country’s 2010 coup. “But a year has passed since I joined YTP,” she notes, “and I can hardly recognize myself!”

Inspiring Girls' Futures, the Youth Theater for Peace Story

IREX is proud to announce the video release of “Inspiring Girls’ Futures: the Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) Story.” 

More than 100 million girls under the age of 18 will be married in the next 10 years. In Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, young girls are challenging this figure by convincing their parents to allow them to stay in school.

Children enjoy a Youth Theater for Peace performance by local community members

With the support of USAID, IREX is pleased to release the full results of the final evaluation of the Youth Theater for Peace Program in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

In Chorku, a small community in the Isfara district along Tajikistan’s border with Kyrgyzstan, Robiya is changing attitudes about girls’ education. In this area, only 42% of girls continue their studies after ninth grade; many girls marry early and quit school to take on household responsibilities. Intrigued by a Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) performance at her school, 14-year old Robiya asked to join the local IREX-supported YTP drama group and quickly gained respect among her family, peers, and teachers for her leadership on stage.
