IREX mourns the loss of Abdullahi Omar Gedi, a journalist and technician at IREX partner station Radio Daljir, who was killed on August 31 in Galkayo, in Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland. He was 25 at the time of his death.

Without their hard work, without the risks they take every day, and without their dedication and sacrifice, more citizens throughout the world would be deprived of the vital news and information they need to actively participate in the development of their neighborhoods, towns, countries, and regions.

One theme of World Press Freedom Day is empowering citizenship through media, dialogue, and education. Somalia’s lively media sector regularly provides informational segments on topics of popular interest as well as forums for citizen debate, primarily via radio programs but also newspapers, television, and blogs.

While Somalia’s semi-autonomous republic of Puntland has been spared much of the violence and chaos that have engulfed Somalia since 1991, journalists there have not been spared from violence and intimidation. Foreign audiences may see Puntland in the news as a base of piracy in the shipping channels of the Gulf of Aden and along the eastern coast of Somalia, but the region has been relatively stable with a functioning government and a notable media and civil society sector.
