IREX is pleased to announce the 2013-2014 Short-Term Travel Grant fellowship recipients. This year's fellows will be traveling to 16 countries across Eastern Europe and Eurasia to perform policy relevant field research. After they complete their fellowship, their research findings will be posted on the IREX online library.

IREX recently participated in the 17th Annual Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN) Convention, hosted by the Harriman Institute at Columbia University in New York City. ASN is the only scholarly association devoted to the study of ethnicity and nationalism in the regions of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Each year, ASN brings together scholars, policy analysts, regional specialists, and NGO professionals from all over the world to engage in discussion of regional issues. This year, 618 panelists participated from 42 different countries, presenting 425 papers and screening 13 documentaries.

Video: Scott Radnitz, a 2011-12 Short-Term Travel Grant fellow, traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia in the summer of 2011 to conduct preliminary research for a project examining national narratives and ethnic relations in Georgia. Here, Dr. Radnitz speaks about how ethnicity can play a role in politics, the importance of field research, and why research on Georgia can be relevant for the U.S. policy community.

I’ve had the pleasure of chairing research fellowship panels for over a decade. In these years I’ve heard debate surrounding nearly 3,000 applicants, both junior and senior scholars, all trying to secure very limited research funding.  A while back some colleagues in the academic community encouraged me to pull some tips together from my experience in these meetings and also having worked with so many different peer reviewers over the years, from a variety of disciplines.

Because of unacceptable gaps that exist between the majority population and Roma in a number of domains (e.g., housing, health, education, and employment), the issue of Roma integration presents one of the greatest challenges... It appears that the only way out from the vicious circle of poverty, unemployment, dependence on the welfare system, and alcohol and drug addiction is through integration, non-discrimination, and education.

US Scholar Photo Contest Winner-Maria Sonevystky

Congratulations to Maria Sonevystky, the winner of the 2010 US Scholar Photo Contest! Maria Sonevytsky was a 2008-2009 Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) fellow. Her research project was entitled "Civilizing Wilderness: Musical Practices as Political and Economic Resources in Contemporary Ukraine."
