IREX is pleased to announce the 2013-2014 Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) fellowship recipients. The IARO program provides highly qualified U.S. scholars and professionals the opportunity to impact the formation of U.S. foreign policy by conducting open-source research on current regional issues of importance to the United States. This year's fellows will be travelling to 13 countries across Eastern Europe and Eurasia to perform policy relevant field research. After they complete their fellowship, their research findings will be posted on the IREX online library.

On the eve of Secretary of State Hilary Clinton’s recent visit to Georgia, IREX alumna Dr. Julie George gave a briefing on Georgia’s current state and political reforms to analysts and officials at the U.S. Department of State. Issues concerning the transparency of Georgia’s upcoming elections, both parliamentary and presidential, were also discussed.

IREX recently participated in the 17th Annual Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN) Convention, hosted by the Harriman Institute at Columbia University in New York City. ASN is the only scholarly association devoted to the study of ethnicity and nationalism in the regions of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Each year, ASN brings together scholars, policy analysts, regional specialists, and NGO professionals from all over the world to engage in discussion of regional issues. This year, 618 panelists participated from 42 different countries, presenting 425 papers and screening 13 documentaries.

Alan DeYoung was a 2009-2010 Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS). His research project is entitled "Gender and Academic Subculture(s) in Contemporary Tajik Universitites."

I’ve had the pleasure of chairing research fellowship panels for over a decade. In these years I’ve heard debate surrounding nearly 3,000 applicants, both junior and senior scholars, all trying to secure very limited research funding.  A while back some colleagues in the academic community encouraged me to pull some tips together from my experience in these meetings and also having worked with so many different peer reviewers over the years, from a variety of disciplines.

An hour and a half scenic drive through the mountains from Skopje, Macedonia, is situated beautiful Prilep, a town of about 65,000 people. I travelled there to interview Nesime Salioska, the founder of the NGO ‘Roma SOS...’ Her vision and that of Roma SOS “is to create opportunities for the Romani community to become equal citizens with equal rights and opportunities in society”.

US Scholar Photo Contest Winner-Maria Sonevystky

Congratulations to Maria Sonevystky, the winner of the 2010 US Scholar Photo Contest! Maria Sonevytsky was a 2008-2009 Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) fellow. Her research project was entitled "Civilizing Wilderness: Musical Practices as Political and Economic Resources in Contemporary Ukraine."
