In tight budget environments it is tempting to view ICT equipment and training as a luxury to cut. We can all think of a case where technology for technology’s sake hasn’t worked: an unused laptop in the corner of an overfilled classroom, an interactive whiteboard at a school without adequate electricity to support its use, a smartphone game developed for a population of youth without access to smartphones. In fact, now is the time for a focus on smart technology integration in all levels of education. |

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring 2013 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 8 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 4 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas. |

Pregnancy, early marriage, school fees, risk of sexual violence? What are the barriers for girls and boys going to school? As the education community envisions post-2015 Millennium Development Goals, IREX surveyed its pool of teacher-leaders alumni around the world to get a better picture of the ways gender impacts education. What impacts girls’ participation in school the most? What particular factors affect boys? Over 200 secondary school teachers from 45 countries responded to our questions. Here are some of the findings from our snapshot survey. |

Five U.S. institutions of higher education are welcoming 74 international educators from 13 countries who will help globalize their campuses. While in the US for five months on the International Leaders in Education program (ILEP), the teachers will further develop their expertise in their subject area, enhance their teaching skills, increase their knowledge of the U.S., and share aspects of their cultures. |

Unlikely allies, Hudak Hendrix and Jose Douglas Martinez share a passion for globalizing education to broaden the horizons of students and educators in El Salvador and the U.S. In 2010, Hendrix, as part of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), traveled to Indonesia for two weeks, where he was hosted by a local teacher and learned about the country’s education system. Martinez, as part of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA), studied teaching methodologies at Claremont Graduate University in California in 2011. Both Hendrix and Martinez found their careers and world views altered by these international experiences. |

After a semester of intensive professional development at four U.S. universities, class was over for the 63 teachers from around the world who participated in the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP). As they gathered in Washington, D.C. last week during the final event of the program, it was clear that they were now more than master educators: they had become teacher-leaders, ready to share their expertise with hundreds of colleagues across the world. |

Much environmental research starts with a problem, such as species extinction, global warming, or erosion. In honor of Earth Day, IREX is pleased share a story of two physics teachers from India and a graduate student from Alabama focused on a solution. Rahul Chatterjee and Bishakha Banerjee, current International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) participants, are collaborating with Melanie Phillips, a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), to research reforestation in Chhattisgarh and Punjab, India using satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques. |
