A dear friend of IREX and distinguished alumna of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), Ms. Medarka “Med” Muarip passed away on August 2, 2011. One of the many outstanding Filipino teachers to participate in the ILEP program, Medarka traveled to the United States in January 2010 for a five-month professional development program for international teachers.

Ammad experiences snow as an American experience in Wyoming.

IREX is pleased to announce the 2011 Spring semester winners of the Cultural Passport to America competition for the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan. Arsalan and Ammad were selected as winners for their participation in a wide array of cultural events, creative use of their passport to record those events, and their regular and reflective blog posts sharing their experiences. Ammad, studying at the University of Wyoming, and Arsalan, studying at SUNY-Plattsburgh, discuss the Cultural Passport below.

Gobal UGRAD Pakistan Fellow, Fahad Farooqi at Shoshone Falls

IREX is pleased to announce the Spring 2011 winners of the “Day in the Life of a Global UGRAD-Pakistan Fellow” video competition. Farhan, studying at Augustana College, and Fahad, studying at the College of Southern Idaho, submitted outstanding videos presenting their experiences at a US college or university and their understanding of American culture and values. Their videos were selected for their creativity and clarity in demonstrating both the uniqueness and breadth of their American experiences.

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring 2011 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 16 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 15 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas.

IREX, as a member of the Executive Committee organizing World Press Freedom Day 2011, is pleased to announce the launch of www.wpfd2011.org, unveiling the event’s agenda and opening registration to the public for this historic gathering. The program for the event, to be held May 1-3 in Washington, DC, is built around this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, “21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers.”
