Ukrainian organizations are taking advantage of new technology to engage citizens in rural areas. With almost a third of the Ukrainian population living in rural locations, it can be difficult even for Ukrainian NGOs to support and represent those outside of urban and regional centers. Recently, Ukrainian NGOs in the city of Dnipropetrovsk have begun piloting projects using mobile phone technology to promote social change amongst a wider population.

In recent years, Ukraine has seen the most severe HIV/AIDS epidemic in Europe and Eurasia, with an estimated 440,000 Ukrainians currently living with HIV/AIDS. While general awareness of HIV is common among the Ukrainian population, stigma and discrimination against HIV-positive individuals remains pervasive, as do behaviors that put individuals at greater risk of transmitting the virus.

After completing ICT training for government officials in January, Senior Officer of Zaporizhya, Ukraine’s Family Issues and Adoption Department Irina Voloshko is using new skills to streamline her workplace. Earlier, the city administration asked staff at the IREX-implemented Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) to train eight government officials as part of its e-Government initiative in Ukraine.

As the Red River rises to record levels this week, Muskie and Global UGRAD program fellows who live and study at North Dakota State University in Fargo have joined the fight to prevent massive flooding. With classes cancelled for the remainder of the week, Muskie and UGRAD fellows mobilized alongside thousands of community members to fill sandbags to hold back the Red River.

After confronting and successfully overcoming her own medical issues associated with an eating disorder, Halyna Kurylo, an alumna of the Global Undergraduate Program (UGRAD), was determined to share her experiences and personal triumphs with others. In fall 2007, she successfully won a 10-month Alumni Small Grant  to develop and implement a public awareness campaign that would educate youth in Ukraine about eating disorders through a series of trainings, workshops, and information distribution.

Public health expert Pavlo Kovtoniuk from Zhytomyr, Ukraine was recognized for his outstanding collaborative blog on public health issues. The blog, which Kovtoniuk created and manages, was rated the sixth out of 30 nominees for “Best Professional Blog” at the Best Ukrainian Blog Contest 2008 in October. An active user and volunteer at his local IREX-managed internet center since the facility’s opening, Kovtoniuk created the resource to share his and others’ views on the healthcare system in Ukraine, its future development, and ways to improve it.
