It is not often that youth in Moldova have the opportunity to meet with the mayor, let alone solicit financial support from local officials. However, when the youth of the Theoretic High School Mihai Eminescu met with the mayor of Hincesti last month, he was so impressed with their initiative that he allocated city funds towards their project. The initiative, called “In a Healthy Body, a Healthy Mind,” will implement athletic activities between Roma and non-Roma youth, with the goal of promoting tolerance among other youth. |

Last month we discovered that our enthusiasm about exchange 2.0 was exceeded only by that of our international exchange students in Pakistan. A select group of forty students, all alumni of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program, shattered every quantifiable participation record at TechChange for online learning. We are excited to announce the judges for the Make a Better World Photo Contest. The panel consists of experts in the fields of photojournalism, communications and international development. They will decide the winners in two categories: Grand Prize and Best in an IREX Focus Area. |

Each year, dozens of undergraduate students from Eastern Europe and Central Asia travel to the U.S. as Global UGRAD fellows. The changes they experience—as youth who gain professional skills, learn about community service, and share cultural knowledge—are well documented and widely told. But their effect on the hundreds of Americans they touch each year is rarely discussed. IREX asked Americans how their lives were changed as a result of knowing current or past Global UGRAD students. Here are a few of their stories. |

IREX is proud to announce the video release of “Inspiring Girls’ Futures: the Youth Theater for Peace (YTP) Story.” More than 100 million girls under the age of 18 will be married in the next 10 years. In Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, young girls are challenging this figure by convincing their parents to allow them to stay in school. |

Ricky Anywar, a former child soldier and a Community Solutions Program leader responds to the Kony 2012 video now circulating the web. He and his brother were just 2 of 25,000 Ugandan children abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army and forced into slavery. Few managed to escape with their lives, but Ricky did, and he turned his freedom into a lifeline for other child slaves. Read his response here. |
