Experience volunteering in a kids' center in Iowa inspired an undergraduate to help youth in Pakistan. Fawad co-founded the Innovative Youth Forum (IYF) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, using the leadership skills he developed during his semester at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. “Through my work at the Alley Kid’s Center in the U.S. I did more in one semester than I did in the past twenty years.” explains Fawad.

Secondary school teachers from the Division of Surigao City in the Philippines are working together to implement teaching strategies to engage students in active learning in their classrooms. The teachers learned strategies at a professional development workshop facilitated by Maria Ruth Edradan, a Physics and Scientific Research teacher and 2011 International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) fellow.

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock

This week Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock welcomed nearly 100 undergraduate students from Pakistan to the United States. Participants of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program, the students will be studying this spring at universities and colleges around the country.

Communities across the globe will soon participate in innovative development projects, as 64 leaders from 21 countries return home from an extensive leadership training and practicum in the U.S. After four months of working at community improvement organizations and government offices across the U.S. and participating in an online leadership institute, Community Solutions leaders gathered for their closing conference in mid-December.

We look back on what we’ve learned, and we also look forward to the new year and all that it will bring. One year merges seamlessly into the next, and thus we start again. IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the fall 2011 TEA and ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. 20 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 11 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) will receive funding to support their innovative small grant project ideas.

Now more than ever we have a global responsibility to advance the understanding of financial rights and responsibilities among our young people. Building on our work in education and youth development, IREX was recently invited to join Child & Youth Finance International   (CYFI), an exciting movement that is working to bring financial access and education to children and youth around the world . Working together we can not only put a spotlight on this issue, we can make real change for our children and youth and their communities.

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of the Fall 2011 Cultural Passport to America competition for the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program. Sonia (University of Arkansas), Maira (Eastern Washington University), Marbaila (Humboldt State University), and Durreshawar (SUNY-Plattsburgh) were selected as exemplary cultural ambassadors because of their participation in a diverse array of cultural events and their regular reflections through blog posts sharing their experiences.

An ILEP Alumna will co-host a webinar on population growth on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at 10:00 am EST. In October 2011, the world population reached 7 billion. What does this mean for people around the world? Primary Source is proud to partner with IREX in offering this webinar. Mytheli Sreenivas, Associate Professor of History and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Ohio State University, and Archana Mankotia, ILEP alumna and social studies teacher in India, will share with us their insights and perspectives on population growth in India.

IREX extends its congratulations to the winners of the Fall 2011 Global UGRAD-Pakistan program video competition, “A Day in the Life of a Global UGRAD-Pakistan Fellow.” Hammad, studying at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Hassan, studying at Arkansas State University, won for their outstanding videos showcasing their experiences at a U.S. college or university and what they have learned about American culture and values.
