A librarian assists a patron at a Bibliomist-supported library

As more and more librarians use ICT and internet in their daily work, their vision of their role shifts from traditional book-lending to community-centered knowledge management. This change is evident in the second Bibliomist survey of hundreds of Ukrainian librarians intended to measure the impact of the program on librarians’ perception of their own capacity, as well as that of their institution over the past two years.

IREX Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner, “Sustainable Development” by Arup Haldar

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of its Make a Better World Photo Contest. The contest received 2,400 submissions from over 120 countries in an effort to best capture IREX’s tagline, “Make a Better World.” A panel of expert judges selected winning photos based on both artistic merit and their demonstration of one or more of IREX’s seven focus areas; IREX’s friends and followers on social media also helped select the “People’s Choice” winner.

Mostafa Hussein, co-founder of SOLAR C3ITIES

At the start of the Rio+20 Summit, an IREX alumnus offers his views of the Summit and realities for green economic growth in Egypt. Mostafa Hussein is co-founder of SOLAR C3ITIES and an advocate for affordable, sustainable energy alternatives in Cairo. He is an alumnus of the 2011 Community Solutions Program. During his four month fellowship in the US, Hussein worked at the Institute for Market Transformation, where he learned about alternative energy cooperative models and market solutions for creating consumer demand for sustainable energy alternatives.

Aid & International Development Forum

IREX will be participating for the first time at the Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) June 6 -7, 2012. We look forward to interacting with our peer NGO leaders, policy makers and private sector representatives and exploring ways to leverage our global cross-cutting work in civil society, education, media, conflict resolution, gender, technology and youth. Be sure to stop by our table at N19 in Hall D at the Washington Convention Center.

Although IREX began its work in the Soviet Union more than 40 years ago, today we implement a wide portfolio of programs in 41 countries in Africa. More than 20% of our program budget goes to African civil society actors, journalists, teachers, youth, and community leaders. Our programs draw on local expertise, NGOs and staff to deliver sustainable solutions well-suited for the African context.
In honor of Africa Day, and the in spirit of unity and diversity it commemorates, we are pleased to share our new factsheet on IREX in Africa and some snapshots and thoughts from recent IREX visits to Africa.

IREX Fellows at World Press Freedom Day received safety training from the Intern

This year’s official celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Tunisia brought together over 700 media professionals, freedom of expression advocates, and development experts to discuss key trends in media freedom globally. IREX again played a key role.

Youth in Jordan Mark World Press Freedom Day

Journalists, journalism students and activists from Jordan and Lebanon who came together to learn about using online tools to raise public awareness about issues, immediately put their experience to work to promote the importance of press freedom. To commemorate World Press Freedom Day they produced viral posters and videos and formed a Facebook group to sustain their efforts.

IREX Iraq and SMEX Publish Facebook Guide in Arabic

With over 900 million users, Facebook is by far the most used social network and with further plans for its expansion across the globe, it is becoming a necessity for NGOs and individuals to open an account for communication. With this in mind, Social Media Exchange (SMEX), in cooperation with and funding from IREX Iraq, produced a Facebook Guide in Arabic.

The ICT4EDU conference aims to demonstrate the benefits of technology and internet in schools in hopes to further advance technology in Kyrgyzstan’s education system.
