Observing World Press Freedom Day in Liberia

Using the global World Press Freedom Day theme, New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies 115 participants from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast came together to assess the level of press freedom in the region and discuss the important role of the media in the reconstruction process in each of the three countries.

Youth in Jordan Mark World Press Freedom Day

Journalists, journalism students and activists from Jordan and Lebanon who came together to learn about using online tools to raise public awareness about issues, immediately put their experience to work to promote the importance of press freedom. To commemorate World Press Freedom Day they produced viral posters and videos and formed a Facebook group to sustain their efforts.

IREX Iraq and SMEX Publish Facebook Guide in Arabic

With over 900 million users, Facebook is by far the most used social network and with further plans for its expansion across the globe, it is becoming a necessity for NGOs and individuals to open an account for communication. With this in mind, Social Media Exchange (SMEX), in cooperation with and funding from IREX Iraq, produced a Facebook Guide in Arabic.

IREX Presents “Innovations in Gathering and Sharing News” at World Press Freedom

The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2012 is “New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies.” The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Tunisia are organizing this year’s commemoration in Tunis, Tunisia May 3-5, 2012.

IREX is pleased to continue supporting this important event this year by sponsoring a panel on novel ways to gather and share news that give voice to citizens and reach new audiences.

The semi-annual publication highlights peace and conflict sensitive journalism worldwide. The second edition of "The Peace Journalist" will be published in October, 2012.

I am pleased to share with you an excerpt from the written testimony I recently submitted to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs in support of the Department of State exchanges budget. Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia

The 2012 edition of IREX’s Media Sustainability Index (MSI) for Europe and Eurasia measures the struggles and triumphs of the media sector in 21 transitioning countries from Croatia to Kazakhstan. Evidence from local media experts shows overall stability in the media sector. Increasing use of digital and social media gives hope for expanding freedom of expression. However, reported backsliding in several countries, partly due to the increased political control of media, concerns the experts.
