Ethiopian journalist Alemu wins 2013 WPFD Prize

IREX Supports the Digital and Physical Security of Journalists 

Every year dozens of journalists are killed for simply seeking to report the truth. Thousands face violence, threats, harassment, and retaliations against their families and employers. Most of these crimes against journalists go unsolved and unpunished. This year's World Press Freedom Day recognizes these challenges to both professional and citizen journalists by focusing on journalists' physical and digital security under the theme, Safe to Speak. IREX has a long commitment to supporting free media and protecting the safety of journalists.

Each year, Global UGRAD students share their American experiences through videos

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of the Global UGRAD in Eurasia and Central Asia video competition, “Life in the U.S.: Sharing My Global UGRAD Experience.” Global UGRAD participants have been busy documenting their diverse experiences since they arrived in the United States in August 2012. This competition is one component of the Global UGRAD Cultural Ambassadors Passport to America program, in which participants document and reflect on their diverse American experiences.

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of the Spring 2013 Cultural Passport to America competition for the Global UGRAD – Pakistan program. The competition recognizes the accomplishments of participants who were exemplary cultural ambassadors during their stay in the US. The winners, Kapil (SUNY – Plattsburgh), Mavra (University of Arkansas), Shumaila (Wilson College) Tabish (Gannon University) and Umaira (Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology) immersed themselves in various American cultural activities, and shared their experiences through a series of blog posts.

IREX Launches Regional Journalist Security Network

At a time when journalists around the world face increasing threats of violence, intimidation, and internet surveillance, IREX is launching a new program to provide training and support in physical and digital security to journalists and newsrooms. At a ceremony featuring US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jane Zimmerman, journalists from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, and the Rector of the University of Central America (UCA), IREX and the University of Central America (UCA) signed a memorandum of understanding officially launching the first of three planned centers of the Regional Journalist Security Network, to be located at the University of Central America.

Today the United States Ambassador to Tunisia Jacob Walles announced the launch of the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program for students in Tunisia. The program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, will help build the workforce capacity of a diverse group of youth from underserved populations across Tunisia. Through academic and leadership training and practical experience in the United States, Thomas Jefferson scholars will gain a deeper understanding of American culture and new globally-applicable skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of Tunisia.

TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grant Recipients Announced

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring 2013 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 8 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 4 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas.

The return on investments in girls’ education and training is well-documented and dramatic. An extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10-20%. An extra year of secondary school results in a 15-25% increase. For international development organizations like IREX, dedicated to practical initiatives with clear impact, that makes the mandate pretty clear: create opportunities that further girls’ education and training.

TEA Pakistan Teacher Moshin Moosa

Dedicated teachers across Pakistan are striving to provide quality education for their students. Moshin Moosa is one such teacher from the rural region of Balochistan. Last summer, Moosa came to the United States for six weeks of professional development training through the Teaching Excellence and Achievement-Pakistan program. He arrived as an English teacher dedicated to his profession and returned home as something else, he said: a “teacher educator” poised to influence his school, his colleagues, and his community.
