Across Azerbaijan there are 19 Community Information Centers newly graduated from United States government support to being fully operated by local NGOs. Although Internet access in Azerbaijan is growing, Internet services, particularly in the regions, remain expensive and much of the country’s Internet usage takes place in Internet clubs or at the workplace. To help bridge the gap, IREX, with support from USAID, partnered with local organizations and equipped 19 centers with computers, internet access and Wi-Fi spots. The centers offer courses and internet access to users, free of charge.

Radio in Mozambique

IREX is pleased to launch a five-year Media Strengthening Program (MSP) in Mozambique. IREX will work with professional and community reporters, media managers, journalism educators, advocacy organizations and civil society to strengthen the quality of news and information available to citizens.  The program will develop innovative approaches to an open, diverse and self-sustaining media sector that provides Mozambicans with platforms for engaging in informed dialogue encouraging accountability and development. The $10 million MSP is funded by USAID with additional assistance from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Iraqi Journalists Press for Freedoms in Kurdistan

A group of prominent journalists, judges, police and politicians recently urged authorities to put an end to voilations of press freedom in Kurdistan. Iraqi journalists have long faced intimidation and harassment from security forces. The country is still considered one of the most dangerous places on earth for those in the profession.

Students at Minnesota State University-Moorhead got an unexpected ‘Journey to Pakistan’ this past semester, thanks to a young Pakistani woman, Zahra, who found her public voice after coming to the U.S. Though students had never before enjoyed a program hosted by an international student, Zahra quickly gained followers through what became a popular campus radio show.

IREX Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner, “Sustainable Development” by Arup Haldar

IREX is pleased to announce the winners of its Make a Better World Photo Contest. The contest received 2,400 submissions from over 120 countries in an effort to best capture IREX’s tagline, “Make a Better World.” A panel of expert judges selected winning photos based on both artistic merit and their demonstration of one or more of IREX’s seven focus areas; IREX’s friends and followers on social media also helped select the “People’s Choice” winner.

Aid & International Development Forum

IREX will be participating for the first time at the Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) June 6 -7, 2012. We look forward to interacting with our peer NGO leaders, policy makers and private sector representatives and exploring ways to leverage our global cross-cutting work in civil society, education, media, conflict resolution, gender, technology and youth. Although IREX began its work in the Soviet Union more than 40 years ago, today we implement a wide portfolio of programs in 41 countries in Africa. More than 20% of our program budget goes to African civil society actors, journalists, teachers, youth, and community leaders. Our programs draw on local expertise, NGOs and staff to deliver sustainable solutions well-suited for the African context.
In honor of Africa Day, and the in spirit of unity and diversity it commemorates, we are pleased to share our new factsheet on IREX in Africa and some snapshots and thoughts from recent IREX visits to Africa.
