This week IREX and USAID will hold a closeout conference for the Serbia Media Assistance Program in Belgrade. Watch the livestream here Thursday, November 1 from 4:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST and Friday, November 2 from 4:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST. Topics covered will include contemporary media law, media strategy and its implementation, media freedom, investigative journalism, social media for journalists, media market and trends, media literacy, and preconditions and critical issues for media development in Serbia.

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Fall 2012 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 10 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 6 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas. |

Youth from Romania and Moldova gave voice to their personal stories of change in a participatory evaluation of the Youth Civic Engagement and Dialogue program. Using the Most Significant Change technique, more than 80 youth participated in an evaluation in which they gathered stories of change from each other and shared their recommendations for the future of the project. |

IREX is leading a global effort called Beyond Access – Libraries Powering Development. In partnership with nine organizations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Beyond Access draws attention to the role public libraries can play in delivering information and advancing development. |

IREX is pleased to welcome the first-ever cohort of students participating in the new Kosovo Undergraduate Exchange Program (Kosovo UGRAD) for the 2012 academic year. The Kosovo UGRAD program, one of the first initiatives funded by the U.S. Embassy in Kosovo established in 2008, brings students from Kosovo to the United States to study for an academic year at a university or community college. This year three Kosovo UGRAD students will be studying in Ohio, New Mexico, and Kansas. |

What is a modern library? What role can young librarians from around Eastern Europe play to promote modern services and approaches in their libraries and beyond? At the International Young Librarians Summer Academy in Latvia this summer, nearly 45 young librarians from the European Global Libraries countries convened to share ideas, learn new technologies, and develop essential skills as advocates, teachers, and community leaders. They were joined by librarians from Botswana, Columbia, and Vietnam. |

She gently pastes a painting of traditional Nepalese women, which has traveled 7,000 miles from Nepal to Washington D.C. “These items are made by students,” Magar says, as she gently touches the colored paper “I am very excited to share with them everything I learn here.” |
