I’ve worked on civil society development for almost twenty years now.  So I’ve seen my fill of inspirational project acronyms and transformative methodologies - each one more synergistic and sustainable than the next:  community mobilization, citizen participation, and other grassroots approaches to civil society capacity building. Over 800 journalists, bloggers, freedom of expression advocates, and new media pioneers gathered in Washington, D.C., May 1-3 to celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2011. This year's event, 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers, marked the first time the United States has hosted the event.  The role of new media and citizen journalism in the ongoing events in the Middle East provided an interesting backdrop and relevant case studies for the three days of debate and discussion. IREX, together with the Center for International Media Assistance at NED, the UN Foundation, and the US Department of State served as members of the Executive Committee that planned and organized the event.

Every once in a while, you have the opportunity to connect two points in your life. Mine began when I was a junior in high school and was selected as a participant for the Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders program. Founded in 1977 by Senator Richard G. Lugar, the symposium is designed to “increase the awareness of current national and international issues among Indiana’s future leaders.”
