As the world observes International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women this year, there is a growing awareness about the prevalence of gender-based violence. But in-depth perspectives about the role of men in combating violence against women are only just emerging. IREX asked three Community Solutions participants -- Alvin Winford from Liberia, Musa Soko from Sierra Leone, and Nixon Nembaware from Zimbabwe -- to share their views on this topic and why it’s important to them. |

Tucked away on a quiet campus that extends along the Mississippi coast, Taibur Rahman lectures to a group of researchers, practitioners and students from The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab. Rahman, a Bangladeshi spending four months in the United States working with the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium as a 2011 Community Solutions Program (CSP) leader, is presenting on economic development in Bangladesh and the country’s increasing vulnerability to climate change. |

Since August, Reynold Samuel from Trinidad, Ashis Himali from Nepal, and Martin Mwanga from Uganda have been working in Boston at Peace First, a nonprofit organization that teaches young students critical conflict resolution and civic engagement skills through peace games and curricula. All three men are Community Solutions Leaders, contributing innovations to and learning from Peace First as they build conflict resolution capacity in Boston youth during their four-month fellowships. |

Savina Sirik, a Community Solutions leader from Cambodia, recently began her work at the League of Women Voters of California. Back home, Sirik works at the Documentation Center of Cambodia. The Center informs the public about the ongoing tribunals focusing on the Khmer Rouge and the genocide of the 1970s. IREX asked Sirik about the links between her extensive work in community engagement in Cambodia and her current practical experiences promoting political participation in the US. |
