But in the countries where I work – Romania and Ukraine – where more than 65% of the population lack access to the internet, there’s no question about the ongoing relevance of public libraries.

Nataliya Miroshnychenko is not your stereotypical librarian; she spends more time blogging then shuffling through the card catalog. Nataliya manages internet services for visually impaired people at the Kherson Oblast Universal Scientific Library. During her 25-year career as a librarian, she has worked at various library departments, from the main collection and periodicals sections, through the local history and marketing departments, to the regional information center. Nowadays, her most important tool as a librarian is the internet.

On March 3, Ukrainian mobile provider MTS announced that they will offer free 3G wireless internet for one year to Bibliomist participating libraries in five oblasts. The announcement came from MTS PR Head Victoria Ruban during a panel discussion on the importance of investing in libraries.

National Training Center

In time for the launch of the national program, the Bibliomist-equipped National Training Center (NTC) for librarians opened its doors in September.

The Bibliomist  project, officially launched on Wednesday, September 30, will dramatically increase free public access to the internet and aims to foster the development of a modern library system in Ukraine.

This spring, IREX Global Libraries - Ukraine staff and the Ukrainian Library Association (ULA) hosted a workshop in Kyiv to kick off a large-scale needs assessment of public libraries. This assessment is part of the planning phase of the Global Libraries program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
