Increased coverage of gender-based violence (GBV) as a weapon of war often narrowly portrays women's participation in conflict solely as victims. While the incidences and impact of GBV on women’s, girls', boys' and men's lives cannot be understated, a balanced examination of conflict must also acknowledge the larger roles that women play. Tuesday June 11, 2013 9:30 - 11:00am join IREX, ICAN and a panel of experts to broaden the discussion of women in the Syrian conflict to also include their contributions as leaders, dividers, and connectors. |

In tight budget environments it is tempting to view ICT equipment and training as a luxury to cut. We can all think of a case where technology for technology’s sake hasn’t worked: an unused laptop in the corner of an overfilled classroom, an interactive whiteboard at a school without adequate electricity to support its use, a smartphone game developed for a population of youth without access to smartphones. In fact, now is the time for a focus on smart technology integration in all levels of education. |

IREX is proud to announce a new grants component of the Ukraine Media Partnership Program (UMPP). Program Officers recently awarded seven small grants to regional media outlets across Ukraine, targeted at modernizing their web presence. With projects ranging from Informtavryka’s website redesign to incorporate pollution mapping reports updated daily, to Redaktsiya MV’s updated regional news website and brand new students’ website based out of Zaporizhya National University, the grants highlight a wide variety of development opportunities for regional media in Ukraine. |

IREX is pleased to announce the 2013-2014 Short-Term Travel Grant fellowship recipients. This year's fellows will be traveling to 16 countries across Eastern Europe and Eurasia to perform policy relevant field research. After they complete their fellowship, their research findings will be posted on the IREX online library. |

Nearly 5,000 leaders across Eurasia successfully completed the Muskie Fellowship Program over the last twenty years. Many alumni are now high-ranking diplomats and healthcare reformers, anti-corruption activists and education advocates, business leaders and well-known journalists. IREX compiled some of their interesting stories and highlighted the impact of the Program in a special 20th anniversary collection. |

In honor of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21 and the campaign to “do one thing for diversity,” IREX is pleased to highlight the recent efforts of two Russian students, Anastasia and Alina, who coordinated events promoting tolerance and cultural awareness in their home communities. Both students are alumni of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, implemented by IREX.

IREX is pleased to announce the 2013-2014 Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) fellowship recipients. The IARO program provides highly qualified U.S. scholars and professionals the opportunity to impact the formation of U.S. foreign policy by conducting open-source research on current regional issues of importance to the United States. This year's fellows will be travelling to 13 countries across Eastern Europe and Eurasia to perform policy relevant field research.
