From September through December 2008, IREX conducted 56 Conflict Management and Civic Education (CM/CE) trainings for 107 youth between the ages of 17 and 24 representing five North Caucasus republics as part of the USAID-funded Youth Initiative for the Promotion of Peace (YIPP) program. YIPP is a three-year program that constructively engages disenfranchised youth by providing them with new skills and opportunities for economic progress and community involvement.

Staff from the Moldovan newspaper Ziarul de Garda travelled 8,000 kilometers around Moldova in 2008, meeting citizens and preparing special reports on the corruption they faced in their daily lives. As a result, the paper published more anti-corruption articles than any other newspaper in Moldova. In honor of this achievement, the paper held a ceremony recently to pay tribute to those who made their anti-corruption work possible. The atmosphere in the cold hall warmed considerably as invitees gathered to share gratitude and admire the exhibition of photographs taken during the investigative process.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was devastated by poverty and social instability, resulting in a sharp increase in child abandonment. Rising alcohol and drug addiction rates also placed many children at risk of abuse and neglect. In response, Russian social workers founded the National Foundation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NFPCC), which has advocated for innovative child welfare models and policy change since 1994.

With footage and interviews from Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Serbia, and elsewhere, participants and partners tell their stories of how IREX projects have affected them, their work, and their countries. From our founding in the middle of the Cold War to today, the 10-minute film provides both a historical look and highlights of a few of our activities in over 100 countries.

During the recent military conflict between Georgia and Russia, hundreds of Georgian nationals became isolated from the rest of the world and were unable to contact their family members and friends when national and mobile telephone services failed. IREX-administered computer centers throughout the country responded, becoming popular and unique venues for citizens to access information about the war online and find out about the fate of their families.

Recently, 11 youth – five Druze and six Christians – from the Lebanese village of Breih came together at a cafe in Beirut to collaborate on projects to improve life in their village. The meeting was made possible through the Youth Civil Society and Leadership Program in Lebanon (YCSL), a US State Department project administered by IREX.

On November 20, IREX celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event at the Library of Congress. Ambassador William Burns and Senator Richard Lugar each gave addresses before policymakers, partners, funders, friends, and IREX staff.

The enthusiasm was palpable during a recent opening ceremony in Porumbeni, where citizens had united to overcome a series of complex logistical and bureaucratic hurdles to improve their water system. The community accomplished a major renovation project to provide safe drinking water for 75 households, a kindergarten, and the local health center.
