Budi’s* friend was shot in the head, one of thousands of lives lost to the sectarian violence that has scarred Indonesia over the past decade. After the tragedy, Budi’s neighborhood in Ambon fractured on religious lines. The teenager, who is Christian, would not associate with Muslims and was trained by a militant group to use arms. Today, Budi is using a new weapon to wage war on the conflict itself: the stage. |

Youth-led, homegrown projects are making changes throughout Lebanon. They are increasing the transparency of local government hospitals and municipalities, tackling corruption at the Lebanese University, and reducing bribery in public institutions. Although many of these successes were made possible with international assistance, youth campaign ideas have thus far outpaced the ability to secure funding. |

The majority of Hasnain Imam’s students in Howrah, India, near Kolkata, are from economically disadvantaged families; many of their parents are migrant laborers who never entered a classroom. Imam believes these teens are uniquely positioned to inspire others from similar backgrounds and work to improve their communities. “Students in schools like mine must be harnessed to become change agents,” the TEA (Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program) alumnus says. |

The teenage years are rocky for most people, male or female, with self-esteem decreasing for both sexes after elementary school. However, the drop is more dramatic for girls, and in a male-dominated society, a lack of strong female role models and opportunities for women can exacerbate the problem. |
