A year after completing their participation in the Ukraine Media Partnership Program (UMPP), the local newspaper Sobytie is enjoying incredible success. Taking what they learned from their US partner, The Santa Fe New Mexican, they have overhauled their company—expanding coverage, launching new projects, and developing charity campaigns. Sobytie’s management credits UMPP and their dedicated US partner for their achievements.

In any tense political environment, the need for locally driven news is particularly high. Professionalism and the ability to identify and develop relevant stories can thoroughly inform populations in a way that accurately presents their often volatile communities and can serve to reduce tensions and combat calls to violence. Kosovo today demonstrates the need for this locally driven, professional reporting.

The Iraqi Journalist Rights Defense Association (IJRDA), in cooperation with IREX’s Strengthening Independent Media in Iraq (SIMI) program, published its annual report, Violations of Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Expression in Iraq for 2007, on violations against Iraqi journalists. According to the data for 2007, 54 journalists were assassinated, 31 were arrested, 10 were abducted, and 10 media outlets raided.

There is an important relationship between the direction of media outlets and their strategies for viability. A strong marketing division allows editors and journalists to fully focus on journalistic excellence. In late January, 16 sales and marketing managers from various Jordanian media outlets attended a training to enhance their skills. The “Sales and Marketing Workshop,” implemented by IREX in collaboration with Arab Mass Media Center, was designed to help media professionals and their organizations increase advertising revenue to help foster a more sustainable and independent media.

Media managers from the Arab world successfully completed IREX’s six-week MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship, a program funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative. Participants in the program’s second year included editors, executive directors, and managers from media outlets and businesses representing several countries in the Arab world, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

With the relations between Serbs and Kosovar Albanians a key issue underlining international discussion on Kosovo’s future status, the Kosovo Media Assistance Program (KMAP) staged the second of its interethnic dialogues for media professionals.

The Ukraine Media Partnership Program (UMPP) recently completed its fifth year of developing long-term professional partnerships between US and Ukrainian media outlets. Since the program’s start in 2002, 16 partnerships have brought 79 Ukrainian media professionals to the US and 45 American professionals to Ukraine to exchange experiences and assist in the development of their partner media outlets.

The Media Development Program (MDP) in Egypt marked its first anniversary with a daylong conference on the impact of industry innovations. Attended by several hundred media professionals, the Cairo event focused on changes within the media sectors of Egypt, the Middle East, and worldwide.
