World AIDS Day was recognized in Armenia on December 1 with a new newspaper supplement produced by IREX in cooperation with six national and international organizations in Armenia that focus on health, including AIDS education and prevention. The supplement, “This Month,” covered topics ranging from Armenia’s controversial “cure” for HIV to sexual education and the importance of being tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

On September 22, the Kurdistan parliament ratified Kurdistan Press Law No.35; the culmination of an intense advocacy campaign led by IREX. At the request of the Iraq Parliament’s Culture and Media Committee, IREX worked with three other advisors – Judge Hadi Azeez Ali, a member of the Supreme Court in Iraq; Hussein Al-Sahi, a well-respected journalist, and Hasan Kareem A’ti, a lawyer and human rights activist – to form an advisory committee to provide recommendations on the draft law.

In an effort to demonstrate to the Azerbaijani public the importance of debate in a democracy, IREX Azerbaijan worked with Ictimaj, Azerbaijan’s public television broadcaster, to air the three US presidential debates and the vice presidential debate in September and October.

On November 20, IREX celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event at the Library of Congress. Ambassador William Burns and Senator Richard Lugar each gave addresses before policymakers, partners, funders, friends, and IREX staff.

Al Akhbar recently published 25,000 copies of its first-ever local edition, Alexandria News supplement, in Alexandria, Egypt. The four-page supplement tackled municipal issues, addressed local economic concerns, and invited readers to participate by commenting on salient topics. The publication employs an innovative new design, devoting more space to news pictures and seizing attention through illustrative presentations.

Over 3,000 Ukrainian children and teenagers submitted drawings, collages, videos, articles, and even fairytales to an All-Ukrainian Art Contest entitled “I Say NO to Drugs!” for children aged nine to 15. The USAID-funded Ukrainian Media Partnership to Combat HIV/AIDS (UMP) partnered with corporate sponsors and governmental authorities in organizing this nationwide initiative to raise awareness of drug use—a major factor contributing to the growing HIV epidemic in Ukraine.

Greyscale, a dynamic publishing and production company, is launching a new and innovative web-based television channel in Jordan with IREX support. As Jordan’s first WEB TV channel, this citizens’ journalism project will create an Arabic language platform, offering video clips and features on Jordanian popular current events, targeting youth but appealing also to older age groups.

IREX mourns the loss of Nasteh Dahir Farah, vice president of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) until his untimely death in Kismayu, southern Somalia, on June 7, 2008 at the hands of armed gunmen. IREX partners with NUSOJ in compiling data from experts in the Somali media community for IREX's Media Sustainability Index, which measures country media environments across a range of indicia, including freedom of the press, quality of journalism, business management and supporting institutions.

They do not wield swords, few are capable of reining in a steed, and even fewer are given the recognition they deserve. Most are just average people who see a need, note that the authorities have done little to assuage it, and take it upon themselves to rectify the problem. This is the basic premise of the documentary television program Heroes, now broadcasting locally driven stories in Azerbaijan, with support from the USAID-funded Media Advancement project, administered by IREX.

May 5 marked the annual observance of World Press Freedom Day, a day to honor those who practice journalism and advocate for freedom of expression. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, whose Article 19 stated that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right. IREX salutes the thousands of journalists and media professionals around the world with whom we have had the honor to work. In difficult circumstances they continue to strive to bring professional and free media to their countries.
