In an effort to stem the economic downturn affecting media throughout the world, IREX assisted its partners in Egypt to adopt new approaches to achieving growth and income. The Middle East News Agency (MENA) is the oldest and one of the largest agencies in the region. However, with its long history there come some antiquated practices.

Despite being Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria has almost no local media. Only recently, the newspaper Akhbar Al Youm began publishing a permanent local supplement of its Al Akhbar daily in Alexandria and a local radio station is expected to be launched later in the year.

IREX’s film “Forty Years of Building Relationships and Sharing Expertise” provides a glimpse of our diverse work around the world. With footage and interviews from Bangladesh, Egypt, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Serbia, and elsewhere, participants and partners tell their stories of how IREX projects have affected them, their work, and their countries. From our founding in the middle of the Cold War to today, the 10-minute film provides both a historical look and highlights of a few of our activities in over 100 countries.

Al Akhbar recently published 25,000 copies of its first-ever local edition, Alexandria News supplement, in Alexandria, Egypt. The four-page supplement tackled municipal issues, addressed local economic concerns, and invited readers to participate by commenting on salient topics. The publication employs an innovative new design, devoting more space to news pictures and seizing attention through illustrative presentations.

As part of the Egypt Civic Education Program, IREX in partnership with the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS) has developed a “civic education curriculum kit” for Egyptian primary and pre-school teachers to encourage the integration of concepts such as citizenship and civic engagement, human rights, justice and equality into the classroom. The kit contains a training manual for teachers including a selection of practical exercises, activities, and games meant to develop students’ skills for effective and constructive participation in school and society.

Blogging and other participatory new media techniques and their connection with production of local news content were the focus of a recent three-day training course for Egyptian journalists run by Cairo University and jointly supported by two USAID-funded IREX projects in Egypt, the Media Development Program (MDP) and the Partnership Program for Democracy and Governance (PPDG).

Over the past decade, Russia and its neighbors have launched an array of reforms in higher education administration. The introduction of multi-level educational systems and dramatic changes to increase the quality of higher education according to the Bologna Process have been key goals.

Media managers from the Arab world successfully completed IREX’s six-week MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship, a program funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative. Participants in the program’s second year included editors, executive directors, and managers from media outlets and businesses representing several countries in the Arab world, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

The Media Development Program (MDP) in Egypt marked its first anniversary with a daylong conference on the impact of industry innovations. Attended by several hundred media professionals, the Cairo event focused on changes within the media sectors of Egypt, the Middle East, and worldwide.
