The Jordanian Education System has reached a “turning point,” according to English teacher and International Leadership in Education Program alumnus Mamoun Al-Zoubi. As a teacher who was recently selected for the National Team for Designing Curricula by the Jordanian Ministry of Education for the recently founded National Institute of Education, Al-Zoubi could not be more optimistic about the progress of his country’s education system.

Greyscale, a dynamic publishing and production company, is launching a new and innovative web-based television channel in Jordan with IREX support. As Jordan’s first WEB TV channel, this citizens’ journalism project will create an Arabic language platform, offering video clips and features on Jordanian popular current events, targeting youth but appealing also to older age groups.

There is an important relationship between the direction of media outlets and their strategies for viability. A strong marketing division allows editors and journalists to fully focus on journalistic excellence. In late January, 16 sales and marketing managers from various Jordanian media outlets attended a training to enhance their skills. The “Sales and Marketing Workshop,” implemented by IREX in collaboration with Arab Mass Media Center, was designed to help media professionals and their organizations increase advertising revenue to help foster a more sustainable and independent media.

Media managers from the Arab world successfully completed IREX’s six-week MENA MEDIA Emerging Leaders Fellowship, a program funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative. Participants in the program’s second year included editors, executive directors, and managers from media outlets and businesses representing several countries in the Arab world, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank/Gaza, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

As the world of broadcast becomes increasingly globalized, US educators are focusing on the international component of journalism studies. Student and faculty exchanges, academic study of international broadcasting, and the development of relationships and joint degrees between universities contribute not only to the improvement of the education of US journalism students but also to the experiences US educators can draw upon in the classroom.

Arab media managers and supervisors will have a unique opportunity this fall to enhance their leadership skills and find innovative solutions to the challenges they face in media management through a comprehensive six-week fellowship that will include intense training at the prestigious Northwestern University Media Management Center in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois and on-site placements at US media outlets across the country.

The TV Production Fund Small Grants awards will be made under the MENA MEDIA program, administered through the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) and AmmanNet, and funded by the US Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).
