Former Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellow Medet Tiulegenov discusses his experiences and what he learned in the US as a fellow right after the fall of the Soviet Union 20 years ago. Medet, who is from Kyrgyzstan, is now an assistant professor of International and Comparative Politics at American University of Central Asia.

Corruption and Prices

Muskie program and Global UGRAD program alumni are among the winners of Open Your Eyes, a social advertising competition sponsored by the Soros Foundation Kazakhstan.  As members of the Alumni Leaders League (ALL) of Kazakhstan, the alumni submitted the first-place video “Corruption is Dirt” and “Corruption and Prices,” winner of an audience award.

Muskie alumnus Maksym Klyuchar

Muskie alumnus Maksym Klyuchar is now a Local Expert/Coordinator in Crimea for the European Union-United Nations Development Program Equal Opportunities and Women’s Rights Programme (UNDP EOWRP). The youth of Ukraine are already benefiting from Klyuchar’s experience in the US and his expertise in gender.

During her recent tour of Central Asia, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with dozens of current or rising leaders in civil society, government, and the private sector in Tajikistan. Secretary Clinton held a town hall meeting with women, youth, and civil society in the capital of Dushanbe, leading discussion on the collaboration between the U.S. and Tajikistan, along with issues such as regional security and job promotion for youth.

In an effort to build closer ties among minority groups in Georgia, Muskie and Global UGRAD alumni recently brought together ethnic Armenians, Azerbaijani, and Georgian youth in a two-day leadership and cultural integration training. Muskie alumni Koba Grdzelivshili (2003) and Global UGRAD alumni Maka Aliogli (2005-2006), Armani Gambaryan (2009-2010), and Elene Iordanishvili (2008-2009) developed and implemented the training using an alumni grant administered by IREX.

As orphanages across Georgia close their doors, an increasing number of children require foster care. Muskie alumni Andro Dadiani and Maya Mateshvili are working to address the concerns of these underprivileged children by establishing a link among foster parents, the state, and the foster children they serve.

A new class of Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellows arrived in the US recently to kick-off their graduate study programs.

The fellowship program brings emerging leaders in key professional fields from Eurasia to the United States for one to two years of study at institutions across the United States.

Shalva Tabatadze, a 2006 Muskie Program alumnus working to promote intercultural tolerance in Georgia, will become one of the newest inductees to Kent State University’s hall of fame. Kent State announced this week its selection of Tabatadze as the 2011 recipient of its Diversity Alumni Award.

Two Muskie fellows recently shared project proposals to improve education and health with hundreds of colleagues at a prominent conference hosted by former President Bill Clinton. Ekaterine Danelia, a Georgian fellow studying international affairs at the Thunderbird School of Global Management, focused on giving Georgian youth global citizenship education. Yuliya Serdyuchenko, an economics fellow from Ukraine at Western Illinois University, looked at providing free polio vaccinations for children in Pakistan.
