IREX congratulates the winners of the Spring 2012 Global UGRAD-Pakistan program video competition, “A Day in the Life of a Global UGRAD-Pakistan Fellow.” Hadia, studying at the University of Wyoming; Abdul, studying at the College of Southern Idaho; and Zahra, studying at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, won for their outstanding videos showcasing their experiences at a U.S. college or university and what they have learned about American culture and values. Their videos were selected for their creativity and clarity in demonstrating their unique and varied American experiences. Many of the program’s 99 participants submitted excellent videos for the contest. |

Because of the efforts of one Global UGRAD-Pakistan alumnus, more than 400 children of Special Education Complex, an institution for children with disabilities in Peshawar, recently enjoyed cricket, badminton, board games, face painting, and table tennis. The “Sports Day” was the brainchild of Sikandar, who was awarded a Project Smile grant to organize an event for children with disabilities. “They are the most underserved group of today’s society. Despite the fact that there is a vast network of educational institutions that can work with these students, the general public has completely ignored them. The Project Smile event of “Sports Day” was designed to give them a feeling of attention and care.” |

Last month we discovered that our enthusiasm about exchange 2.0 was exceeded only by that of our international exchange students in Pakistan. A select group of forty students, all alumni of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program, shattered every quantifiable participation record at TechChange for online learning. The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan (Global UGRAD – Pakistan) is now accepting applications from two and four-year institutions to host outstanding leaders from Pakistan during the Fall 2012 academic semester.

Experience volunteering in a kids' center in Iowa inspired an undergraduate to help youth in Pakistan. Fawad co-founded the Innovative Youth Forum (IYF) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, using the leadership skills he developed during his semester at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. “Through my work at the Alley Kid’s Center in the U.S. I did more in one semester than I did in the past twenty years.” explains Fawad. |

This week Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock welcomed nearly 100 undergraduate students from Pakistan to the United States. Participants of the Global UGRAD-Pakistan program, the students will be studying this spring at universities and colleges around the country. |

Sonia (University of Arkansas), Maira (Eastern Washington University), Marbaila (Humboldt State University), and Durreshawar (SUNY-Plattsburgh) were selected as exemplary cultural ambassadors because of their participation in a diverse array of cultural events and their regular reflections through blog posts sharing their experiences. |
