Last week, IREX welcomed 72 teachers from fifteen different countries to Washington, D.C., for the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) End of Program Conference. These teachers spent the past five months in an intensive professional development program at one of five US Universities. The End of Program Conference is the culmination of the professional and cultural exchange experience that the teachers have gone through over the course of the semester. During the conference, teachers presented excerpts from original professional development teacher training modules that they created at their host universities on effective teaching methods such as active learning, sheltered instruction, and technology for instruction. |

IREX is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring 2011 TEA/ILEP Alumni Small Grants competition. IREX, in conjunction with an independent selection committee and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, selected 16 alumni of the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) and 15 alumni of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) to receive funding to support their original small grant project ideas. |

Not many students come to the library at the University of Cape Verde in the late afternoon on weekdays. The 2nd and 3rd years are in their classes and the 1st years have already gone home for the day. But Monica comes to the library most afternoons to do research and design the visuals for her class. |

Alice Sayo is a teacher from Kenya who arrived in the US in January 2011 as a participant on the International Leaders in Education Program. Against incredible odds, Alice avoided early marriage, went to school, and became a teacher, assistant principal, and an advocate for girls’ education. |
